CC 101 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING

STUDY GUIDE
Unit 2: Welcome to the World of Computing
Lesson 4: Getting to Know IT: Exploring BSCS and BSCpE

Introduction

Congratulations!
You are finally done with Unit 1 and now ready to take another journey in Unit 2.

Survey Time!

We are done with setting our minds to embrace a growth mindset to become ready with
the upcoming explorations in tertiary education, specifically in the BSIT program. I will now
present you with a short survey taken from the WayUp website to assess your potential in
the IT field or to identify the areas where you may need improvement. Please answer it
honestly.

Yes No Ask Your Self

Would I enjoy learning languages to communicate with computers?
Am I creative, logical, and persistent?
Do I enjoy being able to solve challenging problems?
Do I like to create tools that increase productivity?
Do the latest technologies excite me?

1. After answering the survey, what did you realize?

Interesting!

2. What should you do to turn those No answers to Yes (if there is any)?

I think we can work on that.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:

LO1: Explain fundamental principles, concepts, and evolution of computing systems as

they relate to different fields

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

Compare the difference and similarities between Computer Science and Computer
Engineering.

At this point, we will now start the actual lesson. Just enjoy the ride, and I hope you will
learn a lot.

Key Concepts

College students must always prioritize understanding the nature of the program they have
chosen. Apart from the promise of a great future after attaining a degree, it's equally
important to set expectations regarding the requirements and challenges of the selected
field. As you are officially enrolled in the BSIT program, it would be helpful to familiarize
yourself with its allied computing degree programs.

In the Philippines, colleges and universities, also known as higher education institutions
(HEIs), fall under the supervision of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). All
degree programs in the Philippines are documented in the CHED Memorandum Order
(CMO), which can be downloaded from the CHED website. The CMO serves as the
guideline containing the degree program's details, the minimum requirements, and the
curriculum to establish standards for its implementation in HEIs.

Let's begin by understanding the composition of computer science and computer

engineering degree programs or courses. To help us analyze the scope of each computing
degree program, we should examine their key areas.

Areas of Concerns

• Organizational Issues and Information Systems - a computer system or set of

components for collecting, creating, storing, processing, and distributing
information, typically including hardware and software, system users, and the data
itself.
• Application Technologies - it involves the usage, knowledge, skill, and competence
in the use of technology in solving a problem or performing specific functions
during and after academic activities.
• Software Methods and Technologies
• Systems Infrastructure - clearly include the “backbone” services, including DHCP
servers, DNS servers, Directory Services servers, e-mail servers, database
servers, firewalls, DMZs, routers/switches, operating systems, Web servers, and
security applications (antivirus, antispyware, IDS/IPS, etc.).
• Computer Hardware and Architecture

Scope of Development

Theoretical
• Theory
• Principles
• Innovation

Applied

• Deployment
• Configuration

Computer Scientists generally do not deal with just the hardware that runs software or
only the organization that uses the information that computing can provide. Computer
scientists care about almost everything in between those areas. They design and develop
all types of software, from systems infrastructure to application technologies. Computer
scientists create these capabilities, but they also do not solely manage their development.

Required Skills

• Analytical skills
• Problem-solving skills
• Creativity
• Critical-thinking skills
• Resilience

Computer engineering encompasses a spectrum that extends from theories and principles
to the specific applications of designing and implementing products using hardware and
software. A computer engineer’s interest narrows as we move away from the hardware.
This focus narrows to the horizontal center, as computer engineers need to develop
integrated devices.

Required Skills

• Mathematics
• Communication
• Software engineering
• Hardware experience
• Programming languages
• Patience
• Management
• Problem-solving
• Troubleshooting
• Learning

Summary

Choosing the right college degree can be quite challenging because most people lack
knowledge about the components of each course until a learner begins the semester. In
this early stage of your college journey, you will encounter numerous hurdles that may test
your decisiveness. However, the best way to overcome them is to stand firm in whatever
decisions you make.
