On the morning of May 16, 2008, Mr. Tapan Mishra, a
close family friend of the Talwars residing in the same apartment complex in Jalvayu Vihar, Noida, received a frantic call from Dr. Rajesh Talwar. Mr. Mishra was informed that Dr. Talwar's 14-year-old daughter, Aarushi, had been found dead in her bedroom under mysterious circumstances. Shaken by the news, Mr. Mishra rushed to the Talwar's residence. Upon arrival, he found the family's live-in domestic help, Bharti, crying hysterically, and Dr. Talwar and his wife, Dr. Nupur Talwar, in a state of profound shock and grief. Aarushi's lifeless body lay on her bed, covered with a white flannel blanket. Her throat was slit, and there was a visible injury on her forehead. There were signs of a struggle, but strangely, the rest of the room appeared to be in a relatively normal state, with no signs of forced entry or theft. The Talwar's live-in domestic helper, Hemraj, who was initially suspected, was nowhere to be found. However, his body was discovered on the terrace of the same apartment the next day, with similar injuries as Aarushi. Given the gruesome nature of the crime and the significant media attention it attracted, Mr. Mishra decided to lodge a formal police complaint to ensure that a thorough investigation was carried out.
