What were the ethical/unethical practices?

The unethical practices of Valent pharmaceuticals are:
1. 1. Price gouging: Valent charged exorbitant prices for their drugs, making them unaffordable for
many patients.
2. As a pharmaceuticals company every company have to spend 18% profit to research and
development to the medicine .But Valent just spend 3% in R&D sector.
3. Valent just wanted to make more money rather than enhancing their services to the customers.
4. Valent offered bribes to healthcare providers or other parties to increase sales of their drugs.

What were the ethical dilemmas for the managers?

1.Balancing profits and public health: Pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to their
shareholders to make a profit, but they also have a responsibility to ensure that their products are safe and
effective for patients. That time the CEO of Valent Michael Pearson just wanted to make profit for the
investor rather than do the responsibility for the patients.
2. The managers were just focused on buying small companies to increase their share rather than research
and development.
3. Philidor was producing some medicine which was not effective the CEO of Valent Pearson knew about
it but he kept it secret to the investor.

Could this be avoided?

Yes, I think this could be avoided. Valent had just 2.1 billion worth in 2008.Then they expanded their
business very well. At the time when their net worth was 78 billion they just wanted to make profit and
raised price of every pill they had produced. For example they increased the syprine price monthly 650
dollar to 21000 dollar. As a fast grown pharmaceuticals company valent could target more people over
the world that also could remain them as a profitable organization. They could spend more money in
research and make sustainable and new medicines which might had increased their sales .

What role could be played by organization culture?

1. Compliance and Ethics: Pharmaceutical companies operate in a highly regulated environment and
must comply with a range of legal and ethical standards. A strong culture of compliance and
ethics is essential for ensuring that employees understand and follow these rules.
2. Innovation: Pharmaceuticals is a rapidly evolving industry, and companies must be able to adapt
to new scientific discoveries, technologies, and market conditions. A culture of innovation,
creativity, and risk-taking can help pharmaceutical companies stay ahead of the curve.

3. Diversity and Inclusion: Pharmaceutical companies operate in a global marketplace and must be
able to understand and serve the needs of diverse populations. A culture that values diversity and
inclusion can help companies attract and retain a talented workforce and develop products that
meet the needs of a wide range of patients.

Producers in Bangladesh face several ethical issues, especially in the

field of international business. Some of the prominent ethical issues
faced by producers in Bangladesh are:

Labor Rights: Many producers in Bangladesh have faced criticism for exploiting workers and
violating labor rights, such as low wages, long working hours, and poor working conditions.
Environmental Sustainability: Bangladesh has witnessed rapid industrialization in recent years,
which has led to significant environmental damage. Producers must be mindful of their impact on
the environment and take steps to mitigate it.
Corruption: Corruption is a major ethical issue in Bangladesh, and producers must be careful to
avoid engaging in corrupt practices such as bribery, kickbacks, or other unethical behavior.
Intellectual Property Rights: Producers in Bangladesh must respect the intellectual property
rights of others and ensure that their products do not infringe on the patents or trademarks of
other companies.
Quality Control: Producers in Bangladesh must ensure that their products meet international
quality standards and do not pose a risk to the health and safety of consumers.
Social Responsibility: Producers in Bangladesh have a responsibility to contribute to the
development of society and improve the well-being of the communities in which they operate.
They must ensure that their business practices are socially responsible and sustainable.

Resolve such issues in the context of Bangladesh.

1.The government of Bangladesh can strengthen labor laws to ensure that workers are not
exploited and their rights are protected
2.The government can enforce stricter environmental regulations to ensure that producers are
held accountable for their environmental impact.
3. The government can strengthen laws and enforcement mechanisms for protecting
intellectual property rights.
4. Producers can prioritize social responsibility and sustainability in their business practices,
including by engaging in community development initiatives and implementing
environmentally sustainable practices.
