1. "Unbelievable." Eckels breathed, the light of the Machine on his thin face. "A real Time
2. Machine." He shook his head. "Makes you think, If the election had gone badly yesterday, I
3. might be here now running away from the results. Thank God Keith won. He'll make a fine
4. President of the United States."
5. "Yes," said the man behind the desk. "We're lucky. If Deutscher had gotten in, we'd have the
6. worst kind of dictatorship. There's an anti everything man for you, a militarist, anti­Christ, anti­
human, anti intellectual. People called us up, you know, joking but not joking. Said if Deutscher
7. became President they wanted to go live in 1492. Of course it's not our business to conduct
8. Escapes, but to form Safaris. Anyway, Keith's President now. All you got to worry about is­"
9. "Shooting my dinosaur," Eckels finished it for him.
10. "A Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Tyrant Lizard, the most incredible monster in history. Sign this
11. release. Anything happens to you, we're not responsible. Those dinosaurs are hungry."
12. Eckels flushed angrily. "Trying to scare me!"
13. "Frankly, yes. We don't want anyone going who'll panic at the first shot. Six Safari leaders were
14. killed last year, and a dozen hunters. We're here to give you the severest thrill a real hunter ever
15. asked for. Traveling you back sixty million years to bag the biggest game in all of Time. Your
16. personal checks still there. Tear it up.``Mr. Eckels looked at the check. His fingers twitched.
17. "Good luck," said the man behind the desk. "Mr. Travis, he's all yours."
18. They moved silently across the room, taking their guns with them, toward the Machine, toward
19. the silver metal and the roaring light.
20. First a day and then a night and then a day and then a night, then it was day night day night. A
21. week, a month, a year, a decade! A.D. 2055. A.D. 2019. 1999! 1957! Gone! The Machine roared.

1. Brief details of extract - which stage, what happen


At the introduction stage / Exposition, Eckels went to the time machine company and
had a brief talk with the man behind the desk about who won the president of the US
that year before entering the machine. Settings - At time machine business operation
office. ; External Conflict - Democracy vs Dictatorship ( Society Vs. Society) Mood -
Expectancy (the state of thinking or hoping that something, especially something good,
will happen). From a third person narration POV.

2. Importance of extract
- to grab the reader's attention on what is going to happen. For example, the line 18
& 19, where text describes the time setting, where they go back in time day by
day until it reaches their destination.
- to give the reader overview about the information in the story, for example line 9
until 14 , where the man describe the animal that Eckels want to shoot which is a
trex, and how dangerous it is

Technologically advancement to fulfill responsibility, the fine line between dictatorship
and democracy (not discussed)

4. Character analysis
- ECKELS : arrogant (line 9 - 11) , when the man describe that the dinosaur is the
most incredible monster in history and it is hungry, indicating that the dinosaur is
very dangerous and carnivorous, Eckels become angry because he thought the
man is trying to scare him
- THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK : competent ( line 9 - 16) , the man is doing his job
efficiently by explaining everything to Eckels. He also warns Eckels about the
dangers by giving him the data on how many people died
- KEITH : a good leader ( line 3 & 7 ) , both Eckels and the man acknowledge him by
saying that he will make a fine president
- DEUTSHER : leads using dictatorship ( line 4 - 6 ) , most dictators are ruthless and
brutal in leading a society so we can assume that Deutsher is that kind of person.
It is mentioned that if he becomes the president, people want to go live in 1492,
which is the year America is discovered.

1) Why would people rather live in 1942 than to live under the dictatorship of
Deutsher?
- Deutsher is a German surname so maybe people did not like the idea of a foreign
person rules them
2) When Eckels see the time machine, what do you imagine the Time Machine looks
like?
- It could be that the machine has a driver seat on them, with an antenna attached
to the floor machine and the others sit behind the driver, with gasoline fuel
stocked beside them.

situation, would you join the time traveling journey if you had a chance.
- YES because life would not be exciting challenges and traveling back in time allow us to
learn in depth about the history of the world by seeing real life
- NO because it requires very strict regulation and rules and the fact that one small
mistake has a very high risk in changing the world as it was.
