1.0 Purpose
To acquaint user with Section 3 and it’s intended usage.
2.0 Scope
Applies to field and office personal.
3.0 Definitions
Single string consists of one string of tubing inside of tubing, casing or open hole
Double or multiple strings consist of two or more inside tubing, casing or open hole.
Single string annular formula: as per Page 3-1 in the Technical Databook.
Double (or multiple) string annular formula: as per Page 3-1 in the Technical Databook
Bull plugged means the end of the tubing is “blanked” with some type of tool or valve.

4.0 Procedure
Work through a sample of examples that relate to calculations required for fieldwork.
A calculator, pen or pencil and work sheet is required.
This material will be used in conjunction with course material for training purposes.
To calculate annular factors using the formula on Page 3-1.
Single string:
Coil tubing with a 25.4mm OD inside of 114.3mm, 14.14 kg/m H-40 casing
1st step: go to Section 1 Page 1-1 for the ID of the casing, which is 103.89mm.
2nd step: work through the formulas for the required capacity or fill up factor:
Multiple strings:
Two strings of coil tubing with 25.4mm OD inside of 114.3mm, 14.14 kg/m H-40 casing
1st step: go to Section 1 Page 1-1 for the ID of the casing, which is 103.89mm.
2nd step: work through the formulas for the required capacity or fill up factor:

4.1 Section 3 – Coil Tubing Specifications
There are five sub-sections in Section 3 pertaining to 5 different grades of coil tubing.
From the left:
Column 1: the grade or type of coil tubing.
Column 2: “OD mm” or outside diameter in millimeters.
Column 3: wall thickness in millimeters.
Column 4: “ID mm” or inside diameter in millimeters.
Column 5: the weight of the tubing in kg/m (kilograms per meter).
Column 6: the pressure in MPa when exerted internally and exceeded, pipe
failure will occur and cause it to burst, blowup or rupture.
Column 7: the pressure in MPa, when externally exerted and exceeded on the
tubular or pipe will cause it to collapse or squish.
Column 8: the amount of torque (turning force) that can be placed on the
tubing and is given in N-m or Newton-meters.
Example:
Page 3-6, QT-900 50.8mm, 3.279 kg/m tubing will withstand 3,410 N-m of torque
Column 9: what “pull” the tubing will withstand prior to parting and is given
in daN or deca-newtons.
Example:
Page 3-6, QT-900 50.8mm, 3.279 kg/m tubing will withstand 25,945 daN of pull
Column 10: indicates the volume the tubing will displace out of a well if
1000m is run in bull plugged based on the outside diameter.
Example:
The Total Displacement column is used for bull plugged displacement:
Meters of tubing run into well x Factor 1000 = m³.
We’re going to run 683 meters of QT-900 31.8mm, 2.125 kg/m coil tubing that is “bull
plugged” into a well, how many m³ fluid will be displaced out?
Page 3-4 gives a factor of 0.794m³/1000m
(0.794m³/1000m x 683m) 1000 = .542 m³
Column 11: indicates what the cross sectional area of the actual thickness of the
steel wall is, and is used to calculate how much volume will be
displaced out of a well by the tubing wall if the tubing is run in
open-ended.
Example:
The Wall Area column is used for steel displacement:
Depth of tubing run into the well x Factor 1,000,000 = m³ of fluid displaced.
We’re going to run 683 meters of QT-900 31.8mm, 2.125 kg/m coil tubing that is “open
ended” into a well, how many m³ fluid will be displaced out?
Page 3-4 gives a factor of 271.0mm²
(271.0mm² x 683m) 1,000,000 = .185 m³

Column 12: contains 2 sub-columns and is utilized the same as in Sections 1 &
2 for capacity or fill up purposes.
Column 13: again gives the grade or type of coil tubing as in Column 1.
The Internal Yield Pressure, Collapse Pressure, Torsional Yield Strength and Tensile
Strength can be used as shown in the Databook unless the tubing is less than new condition.
