#ENGLISH SERIES

A picture paints a thousand words, it’s true, but even the best picture is not descriptive enough
without some sense and meaning.
Since most teachers have to teach mixed-ability and mixed-cultural classes, even pictures with
effective sense and meaning might be perceived and translated differently. We speak different
languages, we think in a different way, we’ve grown up differently so though, usually, values and
morals have a lot in common in countries around the world, they are usually expressed in a
variety of different idioms, sayings or proverbs. And this is actually pretty cool, if you come to
think about it!
This is exactly what inspired James Chapman, and made him create these 15 illustrations that
are a perfect combination of teaching values through pictures and proverbs from around the
world.
“A series of illustrations I’ve been working on for a new book. From talks with a number of
helpful multi-lingual people and a lot of online research, I compiled a huge list of
inspiring/entertaining proverbs from across the globe – one’s that were crying out to be
illustrated.
The aim is to spread the words of wisdom that may never have crossed cultural boundaries
before, while to get to the bottom of how culture shapes the phrases we use.
For example: English – A bad

Icelandic – A bad rower blames their oars
Polish – A bad ballerina blames the hem of their skirt” he mentions.
Take a look at these WORLDLY WORDS OF WISDOM with your students. Discuss values, ask
them to guess the hidden meaning, spot similarities and differences and generally… have fun
with them:
