INTRODUCTION
so clear i t was all but real. Even now, after so much time
has passed, the shapes that appeared to me then still re
main before my eyes and the words I heard still echo in
my ears. That's how vivid it was.
Two women had me by the hands, and each was trying
w i t h all her might to drag me toward her. Such a struggle
was going on between them that I was nearly ripped i n
half. First one would get the upper hand and almost have
me to herself, and then I ' d find myself in the other's
clutches. A n d they kept shouting back and forth: "He be
longs to me and you're trying to take him away"; "You're
going after other people's property and you're not going to
get away w i t h i t . " One was a working woman, a mannish
type, w i t h unkempt hair and calluses on her hands; she
had her dress tucked up and was covered w i t h stone dust
just the way my uncle looked when he was chipping
marble. The other had a lovely face, carried herself well,
and wore a mantle smartly draped.
Finally they left it to me to decide which I wanted to
be w i t h . The rough, mannish one spoke first. " M y boy,"
she said, " I ' m the craft of statue making which you started
to learn yesterday. You know me; I'm a relative of yours,
one of the family. Your grandfather (and she named my
mother's father) was a stonecutter, and your two uncles
owe their fine reputation to me. I f you're willing to stay
away from the jibber-jabber of this one here (and she
pointed to the other woman) and follow me and spend
your life w i t h me, first and foremost, you'll eat heartily
and have broad shoulders, and second, you'll be free of
any bitterness at your lot and you'll never leave your
birthplace and family to go gallivanting abroad. Everybody
w i l l praise you—but for works, not words. Don't turn up
your nose at my shabby appearance and dirty clothes.
After all, from a start like this the great Pheidias went on
to create his Zeus, Polycleitus to carve his Hera, Myron
to gain everyone's acclaim and Praxiteles everyone's ad
miration. People worship these men the way they do gods.

name for yourself among all men; it can't help but hap
pen. You'll make your father a person to be envied and
your fatherland a place to be remembered."
A l l this and a good deal more the Lady of Statue Mak
ing said, speaking Greek like a foreigner and stumbling

life, and desire to strive for the ideal—for all these are truly
the purest adornment the soul can have. Next, all that has
happened in the past, all that must happen i n the pres
ent, w i l l be made known to you; even more, I w i l l help
you foresee the future—in a word, all things that are,
whether of god or man, I w i l l teach you before many days
have passed. Today you are a poverty-stricken boy, son of
some nobody, w i t h thoughts of entering the lowliest of
trades. Tomorrow you w i l l be the object of everyone's envy
and jealousy, honored, acclaimed, a man of the highest
reputation, looked up to by the leaders in social standing
or wealth, wearing clothes such as these (and she pointed
to those she had on; she was splendidly dressed), accorded
public recognition and public office. A n d if you travel, even
abroad you w i l l not be unknown and unnoticed; I w i l l
place upon you such marks of distinction that everyone
who lays eyes on you w i l l nudge his neighbor, point to you,
and say, 'That's him!' I f some great event befalls your
friends, or even the whole nation, you w i l l be the one all
w i l l look to. Wherever you happen to make a speech, the
crowd w i l l listen openmouthed; they w i l l marvel; they w i l l
congratulate you on the power of your words and your
father on the good fortune of having such a son. They say
that some men become immortal. I w i l l make this come
true for you: even after you leave this life, you w i l l con
tinue to be the companion of people of culture and to ad
dress your words to the finest minds. Who ever heard of
the great Demosthenes' father? Yet look what I made of
the son! Aeschines' mother played a tambourine for a liv
ing, yet look how I made King Philip pay h i m court! 5
defected to me, and you know how his praises are sung
on all sides. Yet you intend to turn your shoulder on such
great men, on celebrated deeds, noble words, a fine figure,
honor, reputation, admiration, public recognition and office,
power, fame as an orator, and acclaim as a man of under-

leaves the stage and the public lecturer takes over. What fol
lows is an imaginative reworking of a well-known story told by
Xenophon (Memorabilia 2.1.21-34) plus some reminiscences of
the debate between the Just and Unjust Arguments in Aristoph
anes' Clouds (889—1023).
