Title: Unit 9 ..What was it doing?";

Aims: At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
- use in a proper way past simple tense and past continuous tense
- describe past events
- form sentences using past simple and past continuous
- form sentences using uwhen" and ..while"
- make a parallel between past simple and past continuous and understand the
differences
- to build a story starting from a picture

Objectives:
- development and practice of productive skills (writing, speaking)
- development and practice of receptive skills (listening, reading)
- reinforcement of vocabulary and practicing language in a particular context
- correct usage of past tense and past continuous.

STAGE 1: Organisational moment
The student on duty tells the absents; the teacher notes the absentees in the
class-roll.
Time: 2 min.

STAGE 2: Warm -up.


The teacher proposes to students to play a game called ,,The ball game".
She throws a ball to a student and asks him/her to say the past simple form of an
irregular verb. The student states the word and throws the ball back to the
teacher. The ball will be tossed between the teacher and the students several
times in the same way.
Time: 3 min.

STAGE 3: Homework checking


The teacher checks the homework asking students one by one; the students
answer and correct the mistakes (if needed).
Time: 1O min.

STAGE 4: Actual progress of the lesson.


The teacher shows students a picture of a person (that they have already met and
named in previous lessons) and asks them some questions: ,,What do you think she
did yesterday?". The students answer using past simple] and then write the
sentences on the board and on their note-books. 5 min.
Then, the teacher asks students to think of the actions that person was doing in a
particular period of time (changing the tense from past simple into past
continuous). The students answer and write down. 5 min.

The teacher shows the students another picture and elicits them to form some
sentences related to that picture, changing the task several times (group work) :
- Write six sentences about what happened last time at the math class (a definite
moment in the past - use past simple).
- Write six sentences about what were some persons in the picture doing at that
moment (actions in progression at a particular moment in the past - past continuous).
- Now, join the sentences above using ..when" or ,,while" to show what were the
persons in the picture doing at the same time {simultaneous actions in the past -
past continuous). 15 min.
Total time: 25 min.

STAGE 5: Feedback
The teacher explains that she is going to hand out some sheets of paper containing
a text and the students will have to complete that text with the given phrases. The
students solve the exercise and then hand out the papers back to their teacher.
Time: 7 min.

STAGE 6: Homework and reward.


The teacher sets the homework : exercises 2, 3 /page 59 in their note-books.
The teacher addresses encouragements and thanks to her students and gives them grades
or small rewards(smiley faces).
