Task 5. Reading for the first time

Conversation 1

Susan: It’s great to see you, David. Have you been in San Carlos long?

David: Just a few days. I’m really excited to be here.

Susan: I can’t wait to show you around. Have you been to La Fortuna yet?

David: Yeah. I’ve already been to La Fortuna once. I went hiking, and I also took a zip lining and whit- water rafting tour. It
was my first time doing extreme sports. I liked it a lot.

Susan: Oh well, have you tried the cave spelunking in El Venado Caves? I have heard it is really exciting.

David: No, I haven’t. What is it about?

Susan: It is the most extreme version of hiking. You hike through dark caves with a flashlight, and the trail won’t be easy.
You’ll need to climb over rocks, forge through streams and ponds, and explore dead-end caverns before making it out.

David: Wow! That’s definitely something I want to do. When should we go?

Susan: What about Sunday? We need to take a bus to Monterrey and then a taxi to El Venado

David: It sounds perfect to me.

Susan: Great! Let’s meet at the bus station at 7:00 am.

David: Sure! I´ll see you then. Thanks for the invite.

Susan: My pleasure!

Conversation 2

Gabby: Hey, Michael. I’ve seen you’re really into sports. What kinds of sports do you practice?

Michael: I've always liked extreme sports: waterfall rappelling, paragliding, bungee jumping, zip lining, and many others.

Gabby: I didn't know you were so adventurous.

Michael: Well, I like to feel the adrenaline. I usually practice extreme sports at least twice a month.

Gabby: Wow! What sport have you enjoyed the most?

Michael: Oh, definitely sky diving. It’s kind of expensive to do it, but it’s worth the money. You’ll jump through the sky with a
parachute and a trained, certified guide. During your several minutes in the air, you’ll get the best views imaginable of this
tropical country!

Gabby: It sounds great!

Michael: What about if you try it?
Gabby: I don’t know. I’m afraid of heights.
Michael: Come on. Let’s do it. I’ll jump too.
Gabby: Okay. I´ll do it.
*Read two conversations (Annex: Worksheet 1), and decide what the people are talking about by writing a
number next to the corresponding topic. There are two extra topics.

A Kitty Scorned

Laurel Robbins from Monkeys and Mountains

My flight into Barcelona was supposed to arrive at 12:30 am, but instead it arrived at 2:30 am. I was tired
and cranky and eager to get to my hotel. As I picked up my bag from the baggage carousel, I noticed
that it was wet. Damn airline, can’t even keep my bag dry, I murmured to myself as I hopped into a taxi
to my hotel.
As I started unpacking, I noticed a smell, then realized it wasn’t just my suitcase that was wet, but that it
was all my clothes too. It slowly dawned on me that this wasn’t the fault of a careless airline. But the work
of a spurned cat that was giving me a clear sign that he was not happy that I was leaving him! Yep, my
cat peed inside my suitcase, all over all my clothes!
At 3:00 am I proceeded to hand wash my clothes in a tiny hotel sink using a combination of hotel soap
and shampoo. For the record, it’s not very effective! The next morning, I met my tour group in slightly
damp clothes with a still faint smell of cat urine which I vainly attempted to cover by over perfuming
myself!

Safety Tips for Social Networking

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can be a great way to connect with friends. But there are
some social networking safety tips you should always keep in mind.
▪ Manage your privacy settings. Learn about and use the privacy and security settings on your social
networking sites. They help you control who sees what you post and manage your online experience in
a positive way. You'll find some information about Facebook privacy settings at the bottom of this
webpage.
▪ Remember: once posted, always posted. Protect your reputation on social networks. What you post
online stays online. Think twice before posting pictures you wouldn't want your parents or future
employers to see. Recent research found that 70% of job recruiters rejected candidates based on
information they found online.
▪ Build a positive online reputation. Recent research also found that recruiters respond to a strong,
positive personal brand online. So demonstrate your mastery of the environment and showcase your
talents.
▪ Keep personal info personal. Be careful how much personal info you provide on social networking sites.
The more information you post, the easier it may be for someone to use that information to steal your
identity, access your data, or commit other crimes such as stalking.
▪ Protect your computer. Security start with protecting your computer. Install Antivirus software. Keep your
operating system, web browser, and other software current. You can use the Pitt Software Update
Service to automatically download the latest security updates for Windows.
▪ Know what action to take. If someone is harassing or threatening you, remove them from your friends
list, block them, and report them to the site administrator.
▪ Use strong passwords. Make sure that your password is at least eight characters long and consists of
some combination of letters, numbers, and special characters (for example, +, @, #, or $).
▪ Be cautious on social networking sites. Even links that look they come from friends can sometimes
contain harmful software or be part of a phishing attack. If you are at all suspicious, don't click it.
Contact your friend to verify the validity of the link first.

• poetry: lines of varying length, forming stanzas

Robo-caller fin phone calls

America's Federal Communications Commission, the FCC, has fined a man who they say placed
nearly 100 million robocalls. A robocall is a telephone call that is made by a computer
programmer. The software can make thousands of calls at a time. The FCC fined the man a
record $120 million because they say he posed a threat to public safety. The FCC says the man's
calls were illegal because many of them were made to "critical emergency phone lines". The FCC
said many other calls went to mobile phones and residential telephones without the person being
called wanting that call. This means the call was a nuisance call - a bit like spam e-mail, which is
also unwanted and annoying.
The FCC said the man committed a serious crime and carried out, "one of the largest and most
dangerous illegal robocalling campaigns that the Commission has ever investigated". The man
made 96 million robocalls during a three-month period in 2016 as a part of a "telemarketing
scheme". He used a technique called "neighbor spoofing" to get people to answer the calls. This
technique tricks people into thinking the calls are from a local telephone number. The man also
tricked people into believing that the calls were from well-known airlines, hotels and travel
companies. Callers were instead passed on to call centers that tried to sell them property. The
man said he has done nothing wrong.

“YouTube has plan to fight online terror”

YouTube has announced a plan "to fight online terror". One of the things YouTube says it will do is to find
dangerous videos and delete them. This includes videos on how to make fire-bombs and other deadly devices.
Google, which owns YouTube, announced four things it would do to tackle the problem of dangerous videos.
Kent Walker, Google's senior vice president, called these things: "Four steps we're taking today to fight online
terror." The first step is to ask users to identify or flag videos that might help terrorists. The second step is to
remove the videos. The third step is to focus on videos that could make people become terrorists. Finally, step
four is to show "anti-terrorism" adverts.

There are many problems with making the four steps work. Perhaps the biggest problem is that it is a huge task
to monitor so many videos on YouTube. Over one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube each second. The
advertising company AdWeek said one hundred years' of video is uploaded every 10 days. Another problem is
that many of the videos Google wants to target are not illegal. Mr Walker said even a BBC news video could
be used by terrorists in the wrong way. Walker said Google would use software that will learn what content
breaks its guidelines. A further problem is how to delete videos that do not break YouTube's guidelines but still
have content that could turn people towards terrorism.

a. YouTube wants to delete how-to-make-fire-bomb videos. T / F

technology in general, especially in our personal lives for things like travel,

communication, and day-to-day tasks.

Student A: Particularly with respect to education, technology will become

even more important.

Student B: I totally agree!

Student A: I think that within the next 10 years we will be incorporating

significantly more technology in classrooms.

Student B: I bet we will, too.

Student A: There are a lot of helpful educational apps and programs like

Edmodo and Eduplay that are helpful tools to use in the classroom.

Student B: Technology is very useful, but it is important to control our use

of it, otherwise we will become reliant upon it!

Student A: Agreed, we must be careful with it.

Student B: I’m going to Skype with a friend in a little while so I have to go

now, but it was nice talking with you!

Student A: You too, have a great rest of your day!
