KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME

Hockey is a game that is played around the


world in many countries.
India has been participating in Olympic Hockey
since 1928.
International Hockey Federation was
constituted on January 7, 1924.
Hockey is a national game of India.
The main objective of hockey is to hit the ball
with a stick into a goal.

When a ball goes into the goal, a point is


awarded to that team who scored the goal.

The team with the maximum goal at the end of


the game is declared as the winner.
MATCH TIMINGS

A match consists of two periods of 35


minutes and a half time interval of 5
minutes.

Totally 70 minutes play time.


TIE BREAKER

● In case both the teams score an equal number of goals or no


goals are scored at the end of the match, 5 minutes extra
period will be given.
● If scores are still level then the game will be decided with
Penalty shootout. Each team takes 5 shots on goal.
● If the penalty shootout also ends in tie, then sudden death
is next in row to break the tie.
In this each team will take shot alternatively. To take this
shot both the teams choose one player. And the tie breaks
when any of the team misses the goal. The team missing
goal loses the game.
SUBSTITUTION

It is permitted at any time except during


penalty corner. During this period
substitution is only permitted for injury or
suspension of the defending goalkeeper
with goalkeeping privileges.
● There is no limit to the number of players
who are permitted to substitute at the
same time or any number of times any
player is permitted to substitute.

● Substitutions are not permitted for


suspended players.

● Time is stopped only for substitution of


goalkeeper, not for other players.
Players clothing and equipment

● Field players of the team must wear uniform


clothing.
● Players must not wear anything which is
dangerous to other players.
● Goal Keepers must wear a single-coloured shirt
or garment which is different in colour from
the other team members.
● Goalkeeper must wear protective equipments.
START AND RESTART THE MATCH
Procedure for start The match
a. A coin is tossed
. The team which wins the toss has the choice of, which
goal to attack or start the match with a centre pass.

. If the team winnings the toss chooses, which goal to


attack in the first half of the match the opposing team
starts the match.

. If the team winnings the toss chooses to start the match,


the opposing team has the choice of which goal to attack.
b. Direction of play is reversed in the second half
of the match.

c. A centre pass is taken


. Centre pass is taken at the centre of the field.
. It is permitted to play the ball in any
direction.
. All players other than player taking the centre
pass must be in their half of the field.
RESTART THE MATCH / BULLY

A bully take plays to restart a match when time or play


has been stopped for an injury or for any other reason
and no penalty has been awarded.

PROCEDURE

A. A bully is taken close to the location of the ball,


when play was stopped but not within 15 metres
of the back line.

1. Side Line
The ball is out of play when it passes
completely over side line, play is re-started
where the ball crossed the line.

The ball must be placed on the side line and


free hit is applied.
2. Back Line

If the ball goes out of the field from back line and lastly
touched by attacker, play is re-started with a pass or a hit
at the 16 yard line by the defence.

If the last touch was by defender or goal keeper the game


is re-started with a long corner pass or hit from a spot on
the 5 yards from the corner flag on the side line.

If the ball is played intentionally by the defender, game is


re-started with a penalty corner.
3. After every goal

The play is re-started by a centre pass from


the centre of the field.

Centre pass is taken by the team against


which the goal is scored.
CONDUCT OF PLAYERS

. Players must not use the stick in a dangerous way.


. Players must not lift the stick above shoulder height, except
defenders are permitted to stop the ball.
. Players must not hit the ball with the back of the stick.
. Players must not intentionally raise the ball from a hit except for a
goal.
. Field players must not stop ,kick ,pick up, throw or carry the ball with
any part of their body.
. Players must not delay the game to gain benefit by time wasting.
DUTIES OF UMPIRES

▪ There are 2 umpires control the match.


▪ Each umpire has primary responsibility for decisions in their
own half of the field.
▪ Each umpire is responsible for decision on free hits in a
circle, penalty corner, penalty strokes, and goals in their
half of the field.
▪ Umpires are responsible for keeping a written record of
goals scored and suspension cards used.
▪ Umpires are responsible for ensuring that the full time is
played and for indicating the end of time for each half and
for the extra period.
Umpire blows the whistle to :

1. Start and end each half of the match.


2. Start Bully .
3. Enforce a penalty.
4. Start and end a penalty stroke.
5. Indicate a goal.
6. Restart the match after a penalty strokes when
goal has not been scored.
7. Stop the matches for any reason.
CAPTAIN
▪ One player of each team must be appointed as
captain.
▪ A replacement captain should be appointed
when a captain is suspended.
▪ Captains must wear a distinctive arm band.
▪ Captains are responsible for the behaviour of
all players of their team and for ensuring that
substitutions of Players of their are carried out
correctly.
