RE: Political Involvement
As the campaigns for city offices are in full swing, I would ask you to think before you act,
While you are free to support any of the candidates, state law does not allow you to use
your position or City equipment to do so. I would ask that you avoid even the appearance
of impropriety when it comes to matters of pure political activity involving public resources
or your position,
You are reminded of the following prohibited activities outlined in the employee handbook:
Engaging in any type of political activity (including the wearing of campaign buttons;
knowingly appearing in commercials, brochures, or pamphlets, or any other form of media
while on the job or in City uniform, the intent of which is to influence others to support
specific candidates) during normal working hours, or while pursuing regular duties while
on the job, or while in City uniform.
Receiving expenses, gifts, remuneration of any type or monetary reward in exchange for
political activities.
Using one’s public or official position or knowingly allowing it to be used to further a
political party, political candidacy, political issue or position, or influence a political
outcome.
Serving in any position for which such appointment or selection is the result of any action
or intercession by a political candidate or elected official, or persons on their behalf.
Using City resources such as copy machines, fax machines, e-mails, vehicles, phones and
the City’s computer network to advocate for any candidate for any political office.
