PREFACE

Smart kids is very proud to present ‘The Teacher’s Handbook’ for

Class - V which consists of a fairly systematic design of Year Plan,
month-wise, unit-wise as well as period-wise syllabus with micro
schedule to follow work plan as per the Research Department of Smart
Kids time to time. To fulfill all the Academic Standards the unit tests
and term examinations can be conducted with almost uniformity as
per teacher’s convenience. Tips to Teacher and Key Book for Text
Book smoothens the work. E- learning - a ‘teacher - student - friendly’
entertains the children as well as the teacher, giving better understanding
of the concepts. This handbook endeavours to take a holistic approach
to the teaching and promoting the student’s academic standards as
well as creativity levels.

Children desire to learn with joy and fun and Smart Kids launches
its exact purpose through its Term Books to inject the conceptual knowl-
edge with no stress part.

We have practically worked on the students and came out with

satisfactory feedback from the abled teachers who were successful
with its application. A lot of effort has been put in the preparation of
each lesson with hope that the child is equipped with a strong founda-
tion of basics when he finishes his primary education. Hence we rec-
ommend the teachers to follow the given Micro schedule for
better results.

D. 1. The reproduction of plants is done in the following types.
a. Vegetative reproduction b. Reproduction through stem
c. Reproduction through leaves d. Reproduction through spores
2. All seeds do not grow into new plants because of the following reasons.
i) Some seeds are not fully developed when they get seperated from parent plants.
ii) Some seeds are eaten up by birds or animals.
iii) Some seeds are destroyed by strong winds and heavy rains.
iv) Some seeds do not get enough air, water or soil for germination.
3. The process by which a seed develops into a seedling is called germination. The conditions

3. The plants which eat insects by dissolving them in the digestive juices are called insectivo-
rous plants.
Ex:- Bladderwort and Butterwort.
4. In nature, consumers have a variety of food to choose from. One type of food may be eaten by
more than one type of animal e.g. grass is eaten by many herbivores. Similarly rabbit may be
eaten by many carnivores. Thus, various food chains are interlinked with each other in nature.
Such interlinked and interdependent food chains form a food web.
5. Some plants derive nutrition from other living plants. Such plants are called parasitic plants.
Examples are cuscuta and orchids.

Tips to Teachers :

 Ask the students how the grandparents preserve the pickles in their home.
 Explain them in olden days how the food is preserved by their parents.

Answers
A. 1. d 2. b 3. a 4. c
B. 1. Freezing - Bacteria need warmth to grow. If food is frozen, bacteria are unable to
grow. Many poultry products like meat, fish and milk, fruits, vegetables
can be preserved by this method.
2. Drying - Drying is the oldest method of preserving food. Foodstuff such as papad,
potato chips, grains etc is dried in the sun, ovens or dryers to ensure that
all their moisture is removed.
3. Pasteurization - It is one of the most effective ways to preserve food. In this method, food
items like milk, are heated to high temperature to kill the germs present in
it. Then they are immediately cooled and packed in sterilized containers.
This helps in stopping the further multiplication of bacteria.
4. Pickling - Pickling is a process of preserving foodstuff in edible oils with salt and
spices. Food like mango, lemon, chillies, cauliflower etc. are preserved
by this method. Before making pickles, we need to remove the water
content of the foodstuff by drying it in the sun.

Class : 5 37
C. 1. To avoid the spoilage of food, proper care of the foodstuff should be taken. Food preservation
helps to prevent food spoilage.
2. Canning preserves food for a long time. Jars of food are immersed in 2-3 inches of water, in
a special pressure cooker. The jars are then heated to a high temperature to kill bacteria and
fungi. Then preservatives are added. Once the air is removed, the cans are sealed.
3. Aerated soft drinks like colas are preserved by removing oxygen and dissolving carbon diox-
ide in them under pressure. This process is called carbonating.
4. A diet that contains all the nutrients in sufficient quantity along with an adequate amount of
water and roughage, is called a balanced diet.
5. Certain non-communicable diseases are caused due to the deficiency of a particular nutri-
ent. Such diseases are called deficiency diseases.

Natural disasters include floods, cyclones, volcanic eruptions, forest fires, earthquakes
and tidal waves.
2. Floods occur when the rivers overflow due to heavy rains. A lot of water covers, the nor-

are known as flash floods.
3. Landslides destroy everything that comes in their path. They wipe out villages and towns.
They cut off electricity, communication etc.
4. Tsunamis are huge waves or disturbances that move in oceans and displace a large mass
of water. The waves spread at the speed of 500-1000 kilometres per hour and may rise up
to 30 metres in height. The speed and weight of water crush all objects in its path and
reduces all buildings to rubble. Cyclones and tsunamis mostly hit coastal areas, so people
and cattle of these areas are worst affected.

The toy that I have held onto all these years is a Teddy Bear. I got it as a new born present, and
it has survived almost 11 years with me and that’s a lot of years. I do not know why, but I named
her Twitchy and have stuck with it. I also do not know why I was so attracted to it. Just a stuffed
teddy bear, but I think little kids stick with stuffed animals because they somehow make feel
comfortable to lie on and hold. My Twitchy is always there to listen to my stories and dreams.
And the best part is it will never tell anyone.

Subject : Regarding the increase of robberies and thefts in my area.

Dear Sir,

I would like to seek the courtesy of your newspaper to publish this letter on the above
subject matter. This will help to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the
matter.

There are frequent incidences of snatching, burglary and theft. In addition to this, there were
incidences of car lifting also. Last Sunday, armed thieves broke out into the house of our
neighbourhood. Everybody is afraid of this situation. The increasing number of thefts depicts the
picture of complete lawlessness.

The concerned authorities should look into the matter and arrest the thieves as soon as
possible. Your efforts in this regard would be much appreciated by one and all.

Your truly,

Santhosh.

I hope this letter finds you in the best health. Grandma, I thank you very much for the bicycle

have a bicycle, I was planning to buy one. The bicycle sent by you is really very beautiful and has
been admired by all. It will help me to go school on my own. It will always remind me of your love
for me.

We all missed you on my birthday. I once again thank you for sending me the most cher-
ished present on my birthday.

Yours lovely,

Dolly.
