Text
Where they could place text and graphics to sell products developed the
Internet during the 1970s. Military advisers suggested the advantage of
being able to operate one computer from another terminal in the case of
an attack. In the first years after its creation, the Internet was used mainly
by scientists to communicate with other scientists. The Internet remained
under government control until 1984. In the early 1990s, colleges and
universities posted research data on the Internet, mostly for commercial
purposes, corporations created their own websites where they could
place text and graphics to sell products. Soon, airline tickets, hotel
reservations, books, and even cars and homes could be purchased online.
Eventually the world wide web was developed, so that students would be
able to find valuable information without having to leave their
dormitories. Companies soon discovered that work could be done at
home and submitted online, so a whole new class of employees began to
earn a living from home offices, wearing pajamas.

The true story of Santa Claus begins a long time ago, with Nicholas,
who was born in the village of Patara during the third century. In that
century, the area was Greek, but is now part of the southern coast of
Turkey. While Nicholas was still very young, his wealthy parents, who
raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic. Obeying Jesus'
words to"sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas
used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering.
He dedicated his life to his generosity to those in need while he was still a
young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for
serving God, and was made Bishop of Myra, for his love for children, and
for his concern for others.

In ancient times, the clepsydra, or water clock, was the best
timepiece, which measured time by the regular dripping of water through
a narrow opening. The clock worked by collecting water in the lower
reservoir, where a float carrying a pointer rose and marked the hours. The
best water clocks were quite elaborate but few in number and fragile.
They could not be relied on to tell exact time and were often off by a large
fraction of an hour. The mechanical clock was later invented in medieval
Europe. Clever arrangements of gears and wheels could be made to turn
by weights attached to them, the wheels were forced to turn in a slow,
regular manner, as the weights were pulled downward by the force of
gravity. A pointer, properly attached to the wheels, marked the hours.
These mechanical clocks were less delicate than water clocks and required
less maintenance. They became common in churches and monasteries
and could be relied on to tell when to toll the bells for regular prayers or
church attendance. The word "clock" comes from the French cloche,
meaning "bell."

Darwin's widely accepted Theory of Evolution is the notion that all
life is related and has descended from a common ancestor. His general
theory supports the idea that life came from non-life, through a natural
"descent with modification". Or in simpler terms, complex creatures
evolve from more simplistic ancestors naturally over time. What that
means is, as random genetic mutations occur within an organism's genes,
the beneficial mutations are preserved ) because they aid survival - a
process known as "natural selection". These beneficial mutations are
passed on to the next generation. Over time, beneficial mutations
accumulate and the result is an entirely different organism!

Are you looking for an exciting way to spend more time with your
kids? Experts say the Nintendo Wii is the best gaming console for kids and
families. This gaming console is perfect for those who are looking to be
active while still playing their favorite Nintendo games. The Wii remote
has special controllers that allow users to imitate the motions of different
activities, like swinging a sword, throwing a punch, or driving a car. This
makes it a much more interactive and enjoyable gaming experience for
children and adults. The Wii has taken the idea of gaming and made it into
something that everyone can enjoy without feeling as if they
accomplished nothing during the process. You can exercise, play your
favorite sport, and spend some quality time with your family, all at the
same time. So, if you haven't purchased a gaming console because you
think it will separate your family or encourage your children to be lazy, try
a Nintendo Wii, and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

Now use the ad above to write an email to a parent or partner. Convince

him / her that buying this gaming console would be a good decision.
Emphasize the way it includes the whole family, encourages physical
activity, etc.

A printing press is a machine that applies pressure to an inked
surface, which then transfers the ink onto another material (such as paper
or cloth). The invention was typically used for texts, and the spread of the
printing press is widely regarded as the first mass production of books in
history. The printing press revolutionized the way people are able to
describe the world they live in, communicate with others, and preserve
moments of historical or personal importance.
The process of bookmaking in assembly line-style led to the most
influential event in the second millennium AD. A single Renaissance
printing press could produce 3,600 pages per workday, compared to only
the forty by typographic hand-printing, and just a few by hand-copying.
Books by bestselling authors like Luther or Erasmus were sold by the
hundreds of thousands in their lifetime.

Get ready. The Flexxit IT Company is launching Speakall tonight, the
first software prepared to transform voice into written words. With
Speakall, you can do anything on the computer without touching it, not
just writing. Just give the order "Open Google. Search Bank Investment”
and that's it. The only thing you'll need is a headphone and a microphone.
The CEO of Flexxit, Mr. Goldmeyer, spoke to our magazine yesterday to
explain why this software is causing such a fuss in the IT world and outside
it too saying: "You see, people don't want to type anymore. Keyboards
and mouses are causing people to develop injuries from repetitive tasks,
and it's not comfortable to sit in front of the computer all day long. That's
why we came up with the idea for Speakall. You say something and the
program writes it down for you with the correct spelling. If you want to
send an email in French, you just say the words and the software will
translate everything. It's as easy as talking to someone on the phone.”
That's why Flexxit is advertising the software with a picture of a
businessman working laying down on his couch, because it is actually
possible.

You are a manager of bookshop and you are interested in Speakall. Write
an email to your boss inviting him to the launch of the software, explaining
why you think it's going to be a good acquisition for the store.

The government is discussing, tomorrow, a new copyright law that
says that copying a book by any means, such as Xerox copy or scanner, is
illegal if unauthorized by the author. This law, if approved, will cancel the
previous text that authorized copies within the limit of 20% of a book. On
one side, authors and publishers are celebrating because it's a law that
protects their intellectual work and their business. On the other side,
there is a group of extremely worried people, mainly formed by college
students. They say that the libraries don't have enough copies of the
books to meet the students' needs and the prices at the bookstores are
too high. This group is trying to convince the government to either reduce
taxes on books or approve a law that makes them available for online
reading for a low price. "It would be like buying a song on iTunes, but
instead you could buy a chapter”, says Howard Smith, the leader of the
students at Crown University. Mary Jane Garrison, from Phillips University,
believes that it would be easier for everybody if the government just cut
the taxes. "We know that the authors don't receive a lot of money from
their books. Most of it just goes to the publishers and the rest is taxes. If
the government reduced the taxes, the price would certainly fall and we
would buy more books And the authors would get more money too.”

An earthquake hit the country this morning and destroyed three
cities in the north. According to civil authorities, many roads have
collapsed and under no circumstances are people to leave the area by car.
Helicopters are being sent there to rescue the population, bring them
food, water and clothes. Donations are being accepted and volunteers are
needed in the help centers to organize the distribution. Besides helping
the population, the major concern for the authorities is the Wyal
Corporation, a local industry that uses mercury in its chemical process.
The Wyal main building is on the ground, but luckily the earthquake
happened on a Saturday and there weren't any employees inside it.
Although we don't have to worry about victims, the board of the company
announced this morning that the mercury used in their production is being
released in the area in both liquid and vapor forms, producing dangerous
toxic fumes and risking contamination of the local rivers. The government
is calling specialists from all over the country to go to the site, analyze the
situation and come up with a quick solution. Meanwhile, for the cities
near the Wyal industry, it has been recommended to drink only mineral
water bought at stores and stay alert for the use of masks in case the wind
brings the toxic fumes into the surrounding cities.

You live in a city 100 miles from the Wyal Corporation. Write an email to
an old friend that lives in a different state explaining that although your
city was not hit by the earthquake, you would like to go to his / her house
for a week or two until the Wyal situation has been dealt with. Explain
why.

Recycling is more than separating your trash into organic and
recyclable. There are many things you can do before throwing your trash
into the recycling bin that can help the process. For example, try to
separate glass into 3 different colors: green, brown and clear. Don't forget
to wash the bottles or jars before putting them into the bins The same
goes for papers; make different piles of magazines, newspapers, office
paper and cardboard. Actually, for every type of material, there are
different things you could do. For more information on how to recycle
wood, metal, plastics and textiles, go to our website
www.recycleandsave.com. Although recycling is essential, reducing
consumerism is also important. The less we buy, the less we need to
recycle. For example, you can reduce paper waste by canceling
advertisement by mail and other unnecessary correspondence. You could
also try subscribing to websites to read the news online and avoid buying
newspapers and magazines. And don't forget to set your printer to print
on both sides of the paper. try to reuse the things you would normally
throw away, just be creative. Bottles can make beautiful vases. Used
sheets of paper cut in small squares make notepads. Don't throw away the
plastic bags from the supermarket. Keep them in your car and reuse them
when you go grocery shopping, so you don't have to take new ones every
time. As you can see, recycling, reducing and reusing – the 3Rs – are the
key to change our habits into a less destructive way of live.

Since 1982, the Children's Smile Foundation has worked to provide
poor children around the world with significant moments of pure
happiness. We started as a small group of volunteers from New York City
trying to collect used toys to donate to poor kids on Christmas. But, as the
years passed, we saw that more than providing a smile on every holiday,
we should be fighting for a smile every day of these kids' lives. So we
started calling the children to come to us after school and help us cook,
sew or make toys, all things that would go to them afterwards. From this
idea of including the children in our process, we ended up creating true
support groups, where children could play, study, sleep, have meals and
learn new abilities. During our first years, we evolved to making costumes
for Halloween, eggs for Easter or providing families with turkeys and food
for a real Thanksgiving dinner. We believed in the importance of children
joining in the tradition of our country's most important holidays. Today,
we have centers in more than 57 different countries, providing children
with comfort, leisure and culture according to their own country
traditions. But we haven't forgotten our origins. So, this Christmas, join us
at the fundraiser ice skating show in Central Park on November, 30th.
Admissions to the rink will cost $10.00 and all money will be used to buy
toys for our more than 5,000 kids listed in the NYC area.
You've received this brochure at work and want to go to the event. Write
an email to a friend trying to convince him / her to go with you. He / she
doesn't like to skate, so you have to come up with good reasons to go.

Dear Suzan, Today I graduate and I wanted to take this opportunity
to thank you again for all your support and incentive through the years.
You might not realize this, but you have played a large role in my having
become who I am and your contribution to my individual development
was always much more than financial. Living in an orphanage, it is easy for
one to lose hope or sight of the possibilities that lie ahead of you - it is
easy to forget that you are just as capable as anyone else out there. The
first time I heard of you I was just 7 and the nun told me there was
something she wanted to talk to me about. She handed me a book with
your note inside and explained to me how there was this very special
person who lived in such a distant place who had chosen me to help. Your
note read "You are special" and it actually made me feel that way. Over
the years we have exchanged letters and your words have accompanied
me every step of the way until here. I am sending you the note back
because more than ever I believe in what it says and I feel confident that I
can accomplish great things. Also because I wanted to let you know that
you are special and I am forever grateful for your taking part in my life.
Had it not been for you, I wouldn't have become a social worker. Thank
you again for having set up a trust fund for my education.

Workshop: "Challenges of educating children nowadays"
From May 25th to 27th, Dr. Helen Foreman is going to address this
issue and much more. Dr. Foreman is a specialist in child development and
behavior psychology and has conducted studies in elementary schools and
daycare centers for more than 30 years. Through a combination of both
her experience and also years of study in the best universities of the
country, she has become a renowned counselor on how to educate
children who present dysfunctional behaviors and has written five books
on the subject. Many parents are faced with the challenge of educating
their children while at the same time preserving their values and freedom,
and being strict and open to new ideas. This challenge becomes clearer
every day as kids become more and more immersed in a world where
technology is constantly changing and even children have quick,
unrestricted access to all kinds of information. Children then become
restless and anxious for more, and parents become overwhelmed by their
actions. The workshop will be held at the auditorium from 9 to 11 pm. To
enroll, contact workshops@brituniversity.edu. It's open to the whole
community and free of charge.
You have received this text by email from your former university. Forward
it to your husband / wife and explain why you two should go to this

Family isn't as easily defined nowadays as it used to be. So many
changes have gone about in the basic structure of the nuclear family as we
knew it, , that the U.S. Census Bureau's definition that a family is "a group
of two or more people who reside together and who are related by birth,
marriage, or adoption" has become outdated. Although it may seem
straightforward, it disregards relatively common family arrangements such
as that of grandparents who look after their grandchildren or married
couples who live in differrent places. And who is to say that your family is
not a family? Throughout time and cultures, families have taken several
forms – in ancient Greece, for instance, adults that are not blood-related
can also be considered part of a family when they have a close bond to the
members of the Family, including servants. In many cultures today, there
is no one true definition of what a family is. Has there ever been, when
you were a kid, a person who you were convinced was part of your family
only to later discover they were ‘just' your parents' friend? All of those
who financially contributed to a household were considered Family, but it
is fairly safe to say that the sense of belonging and trust one gets from
being part of a family, however it is construed, is fundamental to one's
development.

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my
excitement about working with your child this year. I am looking forward
to a profitable and successful year, and I am sure you are too. I have high
expectations for your child and will do all within my reach to help him /
her succeed in every way. It is important that you are both aware of the
course demands, test dates and other details that will help your child
know what those expectations are. In addition, there will be projects and
assignments throughout the school year to be done at home. Your
participation and involvement will not only help your child achieve success
in this course, but also inspire healthy study habits that will certainly last a
lifetime. Please don't hesitate to contact me through the school office or
by email at teacher@teacher.com if you have any questions or concerns
during the year. I am also available to talk to you in person in case you
prefer to schedule a meeting. Attached you will find a detailed course
syllabus and a list of materials your child should bring to every class.
Please, take a moment to review these documents with your child. Finally,
I'd like to keep the lines of communication open with you so that we can
work together to offer your child all the support he / she may need during
the year.
Sincerely,
Joshua Lee.
Write an email in response to the teacher's letter thanking him for the
attention and talking about your child's academic development.

Dear Luka, I am glad you answered my email, I had been looking for
an e-pal for a while now and it is great to have finally met someone who is
also interested in improving his English. From what you have said, you
study at a great school and the education system in your country is very
good. I also go to a very good school here in my country, but that is not
the case of all the schools here. Although there are excellent public
schools, most are not very good, so my parents chose to enroll me and my
siblings in a private one. . But that doesn't mean we are rich, my parents
just do everything they can so we can have a good education. Another
difference from your country is that here we cannot choose the subjects
we want to study, everyone studies all the same things all the way
through school. I like the fact that you can choose some subjects you are
more interested in. Oh, and your grades in school are not really important
to get into college because at the end of high school you have to take a
test and your score in this test is all that matters. So that means that
anyone can get a higher education, not only the top students in a school. I
think that is good, because everyone should be given a second chance.
Well, to be honest I haven't yet decided what I want to study in college.
The only thing I know for sure is that I don't like the exact sciences. What
about you? You are going to college at the end of the year, right? What
are you going to study?
Hope to hear from you soon,
Amanda

John, could you stay a little longer? I need to talk to you about something.

No, you haven't done anything wrong. But I think we should talk about
your latest results.

I know. I know you have always been a good student. That is why I
thought it very odd to see you got only a D+ in the last test.
____________________________________________________________
I see. Well, maybe you have gone overboard choosing to take all these
courses in the same semester.

In my opinion you should revise your schedule with your counselor and
make some choices.
____________________________________________________________
Not at all. If the professor knows why you are dropping out, there will be
no problems. I, for one, would rather you had the time to dedicate to my
discipline next semester than see you barely pass with a C-.
