SPEECH

Good morning to one and all present here I am Hareni. Today I am

going to speak about the problems due to high growth of water
hyacinth also known as Eichhornia crassipes. Water hyacinth is mainly
present in tropics and sub tropical areas. It is usually found in riverbeds,
lakes and ponds.Due to that mosquitoes lay their eggs in these plants
and it would spread diseases. It also clogs irrigation systems,Marine
transportation blockage, loss of fishing and increased water pollutions.
It can also cause floods in those areas. So,it is considered as the most
troublesome aquatic plant. In TamilNadu it is these plants are present in
delta regions such as Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur,Madurai and many
more.Even though this is seen harmful plant or sea weed, it has its
usefulness when used as water purifiers, organic manure, bio gas
production, and also can be used in handicrafts. To produce organic
manure first water hyacinth is chopped into small pieces and placed
layer by layer in a pit and adding cow dung slurry, wood shavings,
powdered superphospate and urea in it. Simultaneously two vertical
holes are made by placing two bamboo poles for aeration for better
decomposition and the pit is covered with mud. About 2-3 tonnes of
organic fertiliser are prepared after 70 days of decomposition which is
much cheaper than chemical fertilizers available in the market. It can
also be made into papers and paper bags by few steps. It can also be
used in medical fields by producing controlled drug release tablets
because water hyacinth contains metformin HCl.There are many ways
to use these water hyacinth plants and by implementing these
processes we could solve those problems and keep the water bodies
free from invasive spieces.Thank you
