Discussing the chapter’s title can be an interesting way to begin the class. The
teacher can explain what the title which is a famous French expression ‘faire la
grasse matinee’ means and then ask the students if they like to do it as well. The
teacher can make the students read the chapter in the class and ask them what they
understood and what not. The teacher may then explain the chapter in detail and
do the comprehension questions with them
In the next class, the teacher may bring students’ attention to different negations used
in the chapter and explain how they are formed and used through the table given in
the grammar section. Once explained, the teacher may say few questions and ask
the students to give its reply in negative. This way they will practice different types of
negative expressions. The teacher may now advise them to do questions in the book.
In the next class, the teacher can form pairs and tell them to do play game in activity

activity 8 for the writing skills asking students to first list the things they love to do
during vacations and then write a paragraph on this topic.

Approach
As in the comprehension text of the chapter, the teacher is explaining to Celine
what is past time and how it is formed, it is appropriate to begin with the reading
of the comprehension text in the class. Some students can volunteer to become the
teacher, Elena, Celine, and Philippe and read the dialogue in front of the class. Once
the text is read, the teacher can ask the students if they have understood what is
‘Passé composé’ and can they try to make one sentence in passé composé with the
help of the sentences they have read in the text. Though the students will be able
to make limited number of sentences, it is good to let them try because after this
they will find passe compose an easy tense to learn. The teacher may now do the
comprehension questions with the students.
In the next class, the teacher can begin by explaining the rules of formation of
passé composé to the students with the help of the QR code video and the detailed
explanation provided in the chapter under grammar section. Once the tense is
understood, the teacher may ask the students to do questions 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 in the
book to practice passé composé in different ways.
The next is to teach students to form passé composé in negative and interrogative
form. Since students have already learnt to form passé composé in affirmative, this
will be done quickly. The teacher may advise them to do questions 4, and 5 in the
book.
The teacher may form the pairs and ask them to do activity 9 and 10. Through activity
9, the students will revise the past participle forms of the verbs and activity 10 will
allow them to conjugate the verbs in past tense.

The teacher may begin by asking students if they know any famous personality. The
students may know a few. The teacher may tell them to choose any one famous French
personality from the chapter or from internet and prepare a small presentation on
him/her to be presented before the class in the next class. The teacher may give
some advise to time limit, rules if any etc.
In the next class, the students come prepared and present before the class. This
way, the students not only learn about the famous personalities given in the chapter
but about many others as well about whom they would have searched on internet.
The teacher may appreciate their efforts by giving them some candies.
In the next class, the teacher can do the chapter reading with them and advise them
to do the questions given at the end. The teacher may allow them some time to do
activity 11 and 12 for fun and for revision of what they learnt.

Learning objectives
The aim of this chapter is introduce the French famous writer Charles Perrault and
his famous stories. They will also learn the names of two famous French actresses.
In grammar, the students will learn the formation of the past tense of the verbs,
which take ‘être’ as auxiliary.
Approach
The teacher may begin by asking students if they know Charles Perrault. They
would probably not know but they would definitely know the famous stories like
Cinderella and The Little Red Riding Hood. The teacher can tell the students that
these popular children stories are written by Charles Perrault. The teacher may then
ask the students to read aloud the comprehension text in the class. Through the text,
the students will get to know of many famous tories written by Charles Perrault.
Once the text is understood, the teacher can do the comprehension questions with
the students.
In the next class, the teacher may begin by revising Passe Compose with auxiliary
avoir, which was done previously. He/she can then tell the students to observe the
sentences in pink in the text and see how the past tense is formed with ’être’. The
students will understand the formation quickly as they have already done passe
compose with avoir, however the teacher will have to bring their attention to the
accords used with ‘être’ in the sentences. The teacher can then explain the formation
and the use of accords through the QR code video and the explanation provided in
the grammar section. The teacher may devise them to do question 1, 2, 4, and 5.
In the next class, the teacher can introduce the negation and interrogation formation
in past tense. A quick revision of negative expressions is also recommended at this
point. It is the time also to tell the students about transitive and intransitive verbs in
past tense: the verbs that can take both ‘être’ and ’avoir’ as auxiliary depending upon

The teacher: Let’s go to the library!
Grammar
The past tense with ‘être’
We have already done the passé compose in the previous chapter. However in that
chapter, we only concentrated on the verbs which use verb avoir as auxiliary. Il this
chapter, we will do verbs that take être as auxiliary.
a. Formation
The passé composé of 17 verbs is formed by combining the present tense of être
( je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont) and then adding the past
participle of the verb showing the action. Most of these verbs express motion or a
change of place, state, or condition (that is, going up, going down, going in, going
out etc.).
d. Vous can be a singular or plural subject for both masculine and feminine
subjects.
Singular Plural
Vous êtes entré. (You entered.) Vous êtes entrés. (You entered.)
Vous êtes entrée. (You entered.) Vous êtes entrées. (You entered.)
e. For a mixed group, always use the masculine form.
• ¥ Louis et Philippe sont revenus. (Louis and Philippe came back.)
• ¥ Elena et Celine sont revenues. (Elena and Celine came back.)
• ¥ Louis et Elena sont revenus. (Louis and Elena came back.)
f. Forming the negative in the passé composé with être
In the negative, put ne before the conjugated form of être and ‘pas’ word after it.
• ¥ Il n’est pas sorti. (He didn’t go out.)
• ¥ Elles ne sont pas sorties. (They didn’t go out.)
g. Questions in the passé composé with être
To form a question using inversion, invert the conjugated form of être with the
subject pronoun and add a hyphen. The negatives surround the hyphenated verb
and pronoun:
1. Sont‐ils partis? (Did they leave?)
Ne sont‐ils pas partis? (Didn’t they leave?)
h. A few of these verbs of movement (monter, descendre, sortir, passer, retourner,
rentrer) may sometimes take a direct object, thus becoming transitive. When
they are transitive, the auxiliary used is avoir, instead of être.
Transitive : Which has a direct object (Object comes directly after a verb.) – use
‘avoir’
Intransitive : Which has an indirect object (Object comes after a preposition.) –
use ‘être’
Example:
Descendre
• ¥ J’ai descendu le sac. (I took the bag downstairs.)
• ¥ Je suis descendu par l’escalier (I came down by the stairs.)

Learning objectives
The objective of this chapter is to enable students to write mail and invitation in
French. They will also learn to conjugate pronominal verbs in passé composé in
affirmative, negative and interrogative forms.
Approach
The teacher may begin by bringing attention of the students towards the format of
the text given in the chapter, asking them what it is: a letter, a postcard, an invitation
or a mail. With the format, the students will be able to tell that it is a mail. The teacher
may then ask who is writing mail to whom and what is the subject of the mail. The
students will look at the text and will answer the questions. The next is to read the
mail together in the class. A discussion will follow on what is given in the text, who
is going? , Where? , Why?, What is the purpose of the mail? etc. On the next page,
the students will read the invitation written by Celine for inviting all friends to say
good-bye to Elena before she leaves. Once both the texts are read and understood,
the teacher may discuss the comprehension questions with the students.
In the next class, the teacher may divide the class in pairs. One person from the pair
will write a mail announcing his/her departure to another country and the other
person will write an invitation for a party organised for someone leaving. This will
be a good practice for writing skills.
In the next class, the teacher may draw attention of the students towards the verb
conjugations in pink in the text. The students have already done past tense so they
know that the verb is conjugated in passé composé, the teacher has to tell them how
pronominal verbs are conjugated in passé composé. This can be done through the
explanation provided in the grammar section.
The teacher may next advise students to do questions given at the back to see how
well they have understood the passé composé of pronominal verbs. He/she may

The aim of this chapter is to enable students to speak about immediate past and
immediate future through passé récent and futur proche tenses respectively.
Approach
The teacher may begin by discussing with students if they preplan their vacations
or not, what they wish to do in the coming vacations. The teacher may then choose
six students who read out the paragraph of six characters in the text. After each
paragraph, the teacher can ask the students what is the plan of this person for the
vacations. Once all the six paragraphs are read and understood, the teacher may
discuss the comprehension questions with the students.
In the next class, the teacher may begin by asking students if the sentence “je vais
partir” is in past or future, “Je vais faire” is past or future, “Je viens de l’inviter”
is past or future. The students may or may not answer all of them correctly. The
teacher may now ask the students to observe all sentences in blue in the text and
discuss the formation. The teacher may now explain them the tense passé récent
using QR code video and the explanation provided in the grammar section. The
teacher may advise them to do questions 1 and 5 to see if they have understood the
tense or not.
In the next class, the teacher can ask them to observe all sentences in pink and
discuss the formation. The teacher may now explain them the tense futur proche
using QR code video and the explanation provided in the grammar section. The
teacher may now advise them to do questions 2, 3, and 4.
The teacher may allow some time to do activity 17 and 18, which will help them
practice both tenses learnt and they will also have fun doing these activities.

In this chapter, the students will learn to use simple future tense and will be able to
talk about future events in French.
Approach
The title of the chapter can be very interesting to begin by. The teacher can start
by discussing if given a chance, what students would like to do through out the day,
what kind of routine they would like to follow. The students may say sentences using
either present or future simple. The teacher should accept all the responses. The
objective is to enable them to speak in French and express themselves. The teacher
may now read the text with the students. The students do not know simple future
tense but they know the verbs so they will understand the meaning of most of the
verbs. They can also take help of the list of vocabulary given below to understand the
chapter better. Once the text is understood, the teacher may do the comprehension
questions will the students.
In the next class, the teacher may ask the students to observe all verbs in pink in the
text. He / she may tell that these verbs are conjugated in futur simple. The teacher
may then ask the students to try understanding how futur simple is formed looking
at the conjugation of these verbs. After the students have replied, the teacher can
explain the formation, the use and the irregular formations using the QR code video
and the explanation given in the grammar section. The teacher may give them few
simple verbs and ask them to conjugate them in their notebook in futur simple.
In the next class, the teacher may begin by recapitulating futur simple and then
making them practice the is tense by doing back exercises. Question 5 should be
done at the end as this will help then recapitulate other tenses as well. If the teacher
wishes to, he/she may also add passé récent and futur simple to this questions and

Cher Hugo,
tortue a déjà gagné.
Quelle est ta fable préférée ? Ecris-moi.

Cher Stéphane,
Comme tu pars à Paris en vacances, je te donne quelques conseils.
Tu dois monter sur la tour Eiffel. N’oublie pas d’aller au musée du Louvre. Fais une
photo avec la Joconde. Achète des souvenirs. Il faut goûter le fromage et le vin français.
Tu peux acheter des parfums pour toi et ta famille. Va te promener au jardin du
Luxembourg, c’est très joli. N’oublie pas de m’envoyer une carte postale.
Amuse-toi !
