Objectives:
Provide students, fundamental understanding of the structure of various organ systems of vertebrates for understanding
life processes.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to understand the structure and anatomical similarities of different organ systems in vertebrates.

UNIT 1: Integument and its derivatives 15 Hrs


1.1. General structure of integument.
1.2. Comparative account of integument.
1.3. Derivatives of integument—glands & their classification.
1.4. Derivatives of integument—Scales, Horns and Antlers

UNIT 2: Digestive and Respiratory system 15 Hrs


2.1. Comparative account of gastrointestinal tract and associated glands
2.2. Structure of mammalian tooth, types of teeth in vertebrates, dental formula in mammals.
2.3. Structure & types of gills in vertebrates.
2.4. Comparative account of lungs, air sacs in birds.

UNIT 3: Circulatory and Urinogenital system 15 Hrs


3.1. Evolution of heart
3.2. Evolution of Aortic arches
3.3. Evolution of kidney
3.4. Evolution of urinogenital ducts in Male & female

UNIT 4: Regulating and Coordinating System 15 Hrs


4.1. Comparative account of brain
4.2. Endocrine glands-Structural organisation
4.3. General structure of different types of muscles
4.4. Receptors-eye and ear

Practical/Lab Course, (Credits=2) 60 Hrs


1. Slide / chart study of Placoid, Cycloid & Ctenoid scales.
2. Types of claws.
3. Transverse sections of any 05 of the following—
Oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, liver, lungs, kidney.
4. Histological slides of any 05 of the following-
5. Skin, Pancreas, Testis, Ovaries, Adrenals, Thyroid & Parathyroid glands.
6. Dissection of gut & cranial nerves of Scoliodon/ Frog/ Labeo.
7. Study of heart, kidney & brain through charts / models.
8. Study of skeleton of Frog / Fowl.
