Problem statement
Widespread poor posture, amplified by
excessive screen time, poses health
risks such as back pain, reduced
mobility, and lowered self-esteem. This
necessitates the development of
efficient posture correction solutions. It
is essential to develop a solution that
can help individuals correct their
posture effectively to mitigate these
health risks.

Common know effects of poor posture -
Muscular strain: Bad posture can cause muscles to
work harder to maintain an improper alignment, leading to
fatigue, tension, and discomfort.

Neck and shoulder pain: Slouching or forward head

posture can result in increased stress on the neck and
shoulder muscles, contributing to pain and stiffness.

Back pain: Poor posture, especially when sitting or

standing for extended periods, can lead to chronic lower
back pain and spinal issues.
Lesser know but Major effects of poor posture -
Decreased lung function: Hunching or slouching can
compress the lungs, reducing their capacity and making it
more difficult to breathe deeply.

chronic Headaches: Poor posture can strain the neck

and upper back muscles, leading to tension headaches.

Reduced mobility: Over time, poor posture can lead to

decreased flexibility and mobility in the spine and joints.
Lesser know but Major effects of poor posture -

Poor circulation: Certain

postures can impede blood flow,
potentially causing numbness,
tingling, and swelling in the
extremities.

Impact on mental health:

Chronic pain and discomfort from
bad posture can contribute to stress,
anxiety, and decreased overall
well-being.
Some Facts and Data -
According to the World Health Organization (WHO),
globally, about 80% of people experience back pain
at some point in their lives, with a significant portion
of cases being attributed to posture-related issues.

A study published in the journal Spine in 2017 found

that adolescents with poor posture were more likely
to experience back pain, with 30% of adolescents
studied reporting chronic low back pain.

When you hold your head in line with your shoulders,

it only weighs about 10 pounds. But for every inch
you tilt it forward, the amount of weight it places on
your spine nearly doubles

A 2017 study found that sitting upright can reduce

self-focus, increase positive affect, and decrease
negative affect in people with mild to moderate
depression

Correcting poor posture isn't just about

comfort; it's about ensuring sufficient

and preventing heart and breathing
issues, including conditions like asthma
and COPD.
Literature survey:
Over the years, several approaches
have been explored to address this
issue. These approaches include
traditional posture correction
methods, such as belts, image
processing techniques, and the use
of sensors. Among these methods,
sensor-based posture correction
has emerged as a promising and
versatile approach
In this elaborated discussion, we will
delve deeper into the advantages
and considerations associated with
using sensors for posture
correction.

Favorable solution

The results indicated that the

mass center and upper-body tilt
approach, utilizing force and
ultrasonic sensors, was the
most favorable for a
posture-detection and
correction chair due to its high
accuracy and user comfort.
Integrating with wearables:

However, this approach assumes

that the user remains seated in a
chair consistently, overlooking the
possibility that the individual may
not use the same chair or could
experience poor posture while
standing, walking, or exercising.
Let’s look at a study on effect of posture on cardiovascular systems:

This study looked at how

different sitting postures affect
the heart and nervous system.
They had 12 male participants,
and they monitored their heart
and body responses while they
sat in seven different ways.

Our Objective

Our project aims to develop a wearable, portable device

capable of simultaneously monitoring heart while
providing real-time feedback to users.

HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

1. IMU SENSOR:
An IMU is a component that measures movement
such as specific force, angular rate or orientation. It
does that by combining a gyroscope and an
accelerometer sensor.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

2. FLEX SENSOR:
Flex Sensor & Arduino Interfacing - Measure
Bend/Resistance

A Flex Sensor or Bend Sensor is a device

that measures the amount of bend or
angular deflection by resistance change.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

3. PULSE SENSOR:
A pulse wave is the change in
the volume of a blood vessel
that occurs when the heart
pumps blood, and a detector
that monitors this volume
change is called a pulse
sensor.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

4. MICROCONTROLLER:
A microcontroller is a compact integrated circuit designed
to govern a specific operation in an embedded system. A
typical microcontroller includes a processor, memory and
input/output (I/O) peripherals on a single chip.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

5. WIRELESS MODULE
Bluetooth module is a basic circuit set of
chip which integrated Bluetooth
functions and which can be used in
wireless network transmission.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

6. VIBRATION MOTOR:
Vibration motor is a compact size coreless DC
motor used to informs the users of receiving the
signal by vibrating, no sound.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS USED:

7. Battery: The battery powers the entire

system, ensuring its portability and
functionality throughout the day. It is a critical
component as it needs to provide sufficient
power to support continuous sensor data
collection and processing, as well as Bluetooth
connectivity.
