LEARNING AND CONDITIONING 2

Part I

Learning and Conditioning

An understanding of the concept of learning has stimulated many definitions from

various scholars to help in the comprehension of the ideas and activities involved in learning.

Many definitions have set several approaches that play a significant role in stabling the meaning

of learning. The following are some of the definitions of learning. In (1985), Gagné & Gagné

defined learning as the changes occurring in the human disposition or ability that persevere over

a given duration and is not simply ascribable to the growth procedures. Later in (1992), Mayer &

Anderson argued that learning refers to a relative eternal change in an individual’s demeanour or

knowledge due to experience. Fundamentally, this definition encompassed three factors namely,

change duration whether short term or long term, the change locus is the stricture and content of

knowledge in the leaner’s behaviour or memory, the cause of change entail the student’s

experience in the environment rather than physiologic intervention or physical condition, drugs,

motivation, and fatigue. In (1994), Driscoll defined learning as a persevering change in human

conduct or the performance potential, which must arise from the student’s interactions and

experience within the world around them. According to Clark & Mayer’s (2016), learning is a

process that entails weakening wrong responses and enforcing the right responses, which

ultimately results in adding new information to one’s memory, making sense of the provided

material by concentrating on the applicable information, mentally identifying it, and linking it

with what one already knows. From these definitions, it is apparent that the concept of learning

keeps changing and its defining keeps improving to accommodate various changes in the diverse

world. These definitions have a strong relation in the theme they are unveiling in establishing an

understanding of learning. Fundamentally these definitions are intertwined and agree that
LEARNING AND CONDITIONING 3

learning primarily entails the acquisition of new information. While that may be presented with

the use of different words, the central theme in these definitions lies in the concept of acquiring

and gaining new information and adapting it to what one already knows. In the summation of

these definitions, learning is a process through which an experience, study, and teaching enable

one to acquire the information he/she has never had in life.

Part II

the general learning of the course. The glossary below provides some of the most important

Part III

During the sessions of learning and gaining knowledge on learning and condition, I once

involved in a personal learning situation that had a significant impact on my learning processes.

The personal learning situation involved the learning and acquisition of new skills on the topic of

learning and conditioning. The learning had been planned and the teacher had told us about the

learning materials that would help us meet the learning expectation at the end of the session. At

the end of the session, I was so much delighted with how the teacher conducted the lesson

through the interactive session that made me meet the learning expectations. The session was

fruitful and I was able to gain new skills and the learning situation brought me many new ideas.

During the session I was able to identify the various definition of learning, forms of learning,
LEARNING AND CONDITIONING 15

how learning occurs, the importance of memory in learning, the concept of conditioning, types of

conditioning, relationship between conditioning and learning, the planning of learning, the

importance of planned learning, the processes involved in the conditioning while acquiring new

skills, and how conditioning affects learning. Fundamentally, that form of learning was imitation

learning. In that form of learning, I was able to acquire new skills through watching how the

instructor and other classmates performed various activities and imitating them. Imitation

primarily involves observing the behaviour of other people then memorizing the behaviour and

later mimicking it. Through imitation, there are emerging learning programs and pairing such as

the use of motor skills in achieving the desired final behaviour. The motor skills help in

reinforcing the learning process. Imitation and practice play a significant role in learning the

aspects of intonation and pronunciation. During imitation, there is the development of motor

skills that helps in achieving the desired behaviour (Hussein et al., 2017). Additionally, imitation

is a vital intellectual, social, and moral agent in formal education (Hussein et al., 2017). Imitation

learning has various impacts today. For instance, it serves as both social function and learning

since it allows the acquisition of new skills and knowledge (Kebria et al., 2019). Additionally,

the emotional and social exchanges it brings help in the improvement of communication skills

(Kebria et al., 2019). As a result of these impacts, this form of learning left traces in me as it

enabled me to improve my communication skills. Additionally, these impacts have had a long-

term impact on my memory as I can still remember the various ideas I gained through imitation.
