V1B – Theself

As a Filipino, I was influenced by both Western (individualistic ) and Eastern ( collectivistic )

wherein being individualistic emphasizes the importance of my personal autonomy, independence, and
self-reliance. To the point that I learned how to be independent because I know that I’m not forever
dependent on my parents and there are times when I have to stand up for myself and stand by my own
decisions in life. Besides, through being self-reliant I also become achievement-oriented oriented
wherein I also take all steps on my own with confidence and success. With the influence of
individualistic culture or characteristics, it places a strong emphasis on individual rights, freedoms, and
achievements. This perspective values individual goals, aspirations, and success. Enhancing individualism
can also help me boost self-expression and cultural beliefs as an individual. On the other hand, Eastern
thought, particularly collectivism, emphasizes the importance of social harmony, interdependence, and
group cohesion. It emphasizes relationships, responsibilities, and group goals heavily. This viewpoint
prioritizes the welfare of the community over personal preferences. Through collectivistic thoughts, it
influenced me to be socially interdependent and be self-sacrificing, and cooperative in a way of
considering the group or for the betterment of the welfare such as friends, family, etc. Furthermore, by
also being sensitive enough and considering the feelings of others. The influence of both Western and
Eastern cultures or characteristics really made me a better person, particularly those good
characteristics that have a massive impact on my personal growth and development as a human being.
