REACTION PAPER ON RAIDERS OF THE SULU SEA

In 2008, the film "The Raiders of the Sulu Sea" was released as an hour-long historical
documentary. The film portrays the slave trading firm in Mindanao in Zamboanga that prevailed even
before and during the Spanish colonization and an indigenous people from the south who are skilled at
water and idealistic in their approach to living and preserving their culture in a colonized world.
It included three Filipino-Muslim tribes known as raiders or pirates: The Balangingi-Samal,
Ilanuns, and Tausug. The Balangingi-Samal occupied the chain of the Basilian and Sulu Island they also
raided alongside the Illanus. Despite using only natural resources, they are experienced sailors, skilled
swordsmen, warriors, and builders of powerful warships. The Ilanus feared warriors who drilled a hole in
the palms of their prisoners and tied a rope to it; most feared because of their ruthlessness and played a
significant role in Philippine history. The Tausug are expert warriors who often allied with them despite
their lack of seafaring experience. Apart from the fact that I said earlier, the courage of these tribes was
almost incredible. These tribes showcase bravery and strength. However, I disagree with the Sulu Sea
raiders' brutality concerning the slave trade. Fair human rights, in my opinion, should be applied. As a
result, they will be able to devise a more effective strategy for defeating the Spaniards. Therefore, they
can create a better plan to defeat the Spaniards. They were particularly adept at preparing for the attack on
Fort Pilar even though there is no Spanish tyranny, the Philippines' technological advancements make
them powerful, and they make me realize that the Philippines was incredible, intelligent, and courageous.
The ethnic group uses different weaponry; Barong, Kalis and Kampilan. The barong is a sword
with a single-edged leaf-shaped blade made of heavy tempered steel that was used in near hand-to-hand
combat to hack Spanish weapons down to size. As you can hear it, it's a pure and lethal weapon. The
Kampilan was the Raiders' longest sword, usually used by the Illinois. This heavy single-edged sword
was often covered with hair to make it appear much more formidable. Also, they use warship which
included the Garay, Lanong, and Salisipan. The drongos were replaced by smaller, lighter, and more
maneuverable raiding boats known as Garays. They were fast assault boats used by Somali raiding tribes.
