RAIDERS OF THE JULU SEA

REACTION PAPER

How important to learn the history or the past? It is very important

to have knowledge about the past so that somehow we can understand
the present.

In the film “Raiders of the Julu Sea” I have somewhat understand

the reasons why maybe some Christians have negative reactions when
they hear something about Muslims. But people has different
perspectives of viewing things so meaning, we can not really judge other
people.

What is raiders means? Raiders was the seafaring Filipino Muslim

who attacked the Fort Pillar in Zamboanga on 1720.

Raiders were known for being expert sailors and their courage and
skills. They were the masters of the Sulu Sea. Some look at them as
pirates or bandits, but using these names seems too bias to their part.
Because one thing is for sure, they have reasons in doing those things.
We should learn how to weigh things because that is very important in
any situations.

In the film, raiders was said that they were brutal savages. They
build impressive ships that was believed to be faster than the Spaniard
galleons and deadly weapons. They even had that weapon called Barong
that enabled them to cut off Spaniards weapons. They were fearless in
battles, even if the Spaniards uses guns, they were still brave enough to
go to battle using only swords. In the film it was emphasized when they
gathered hundreds of ships and gathered around three thousand men in
raiding the Fort Pilar in Zamboanga City and during that time, the
Spaniards where outnumbered by raiders. But the Fort was really
durable that even today it still there in Zamboanga.

There are three tribes of the seafaring Filipino Muslims they are the
Balangingi Samal, Illanuns and the Sultanate of Sulu, all which were
employing Taosogs. They were all excellent warriors. The three tribes
are not really pirates. They were known for being the exporter for
slavery. Slave trading was a business then and they were not raiding
ships in high seas.

The Spaniards conduct a raid to the raiders base and they were able
to chased them because of the steamships that they ordered in England,
these ships were faster, easier to navigate because it is no longer
depending on the wind. But the raiders show a strong will and courage
because they still fought even if their ships are no match to the new
ships of the Spaniards.

The raiders were really impressive because they courage and skills
especially in planning the raid in Fort Pilar. But we still can not deny the
fact that their brutality and wickedness is really scary.

We need to treasure the history but those are already in the past
and those should not destroy our friendships and the peacefulness with
the Muslims today.
