Case study: Airbus A380
• What are the uses?
• What are the technologies?
• Due to what it fails?
• What are the solutions?
Uses:
• A380 is the double-deck jetliner, capable of flying 555 passengers in a typical 3-class
configuration over a distance of more than 15,000 kilometers.
• One of the most complex commercial aircraft.

Technology:
• A380 contains various new technologies as well as cabin and cockpit features, and it also
allows airlines to highly customize their aircraft.

Failure:
The failure itself caused by severe problems. First A380 was handed over to its customer, on
2007 with a delay of 18 months. Development costs had risen by several billion USD. Priority
given to on-time delivery to customers. Quality gates were ignored or postponed. In case of
A380, production already started, even the design had not been finalized. Technical complexity
of the aircraft was mirrored but organizational structure was sophisticated. From different places
Airbus units were made like in France, Germany, Spain and the UK being responsible for
designing and producing different major parts of the aircraft. Making overall configuration
management was highly difficult because the development done in different areas. The engineers
felt mistrusted, and instead of searching ways to remove the bugs, they concentrated on
justifying their work.

Solutions:
• Should develop a strategy to make the best use for the project.
• The employees must be trained on things that they need to work before they are given the
responsibilities.
• The process can follow the phases such as it is designed, developed and tested to ensure
that if there are any problems in the system, then they should be removed before the
production phase.
• A strong assessment procedure must be used for checking the profiles, performances, past
experiences and technological capabilities of contractors or suppliers.
• Major problem is lack of communication and generating reports between management
teams as well as top management.
