A. The Origin of “Kue Lukis” Bali


Kue Lukis Bali, or also known as "Lukis Cake" or "Painting Cake", is a type of traditional
cake that has a unique and attractive appearance. This cake comes from Bali, Indonesia. The
name "painting cake" refers to the way this cake is decorated, namely by painting motifs or
pictures using a mixture of various colorful food ingredients on the surface of the cake. These
cakes are often decorated with images such as flowers, leaves, animals, mythological figures,
and various other decorative motifs.
Unfortunately, detailed information on the origin of Balinese painting cakes was not widely
available. The cake may have deep roots in Balinese culture, linked to the artistic and
decorative traditions peculiar to the island.
In recent years, Balinese painted cakes have gained popularity as a unique cake that is sought
after by tourists and also as a typical souvenir from Bali. This cake not only tempts the taste
buds, but also shows the beauty of traditional Balinese art and creativity.

B. Ingredients and processing methods of cooking


1. Kue Lukis ngredients:
• 200 grams of glutinous rice
• 1 tsp whiting water (optional)
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 banana leaf
• 40 pieces of sticks for embedding
2. Brown sugar sauce ingredients:
• 150 grams of brown sugar, finely sliced
• 200 ml of water
• 2 pandan leaves, tie a knot
3. Sprinkling ingredients:
 1/4 half-aged coconut, grated
 1/4 tsp salt
 1 pandan leaf, tie a knot
4. Method of cooking:
a. Step 1
Wash off the glutinous rice, soak for 30 minutes. Drain, add 1/4 tsp salt.
b. Step 2
Heat the boiler, steam the glutinous rice until half cooked or for 20 minutes more
or less. Lift, set aside.

c. Step 3
Prepare the leaves and sticks for the pin. Cut leaves 5-6 cm wide, wash well or
wipe with a clean cloth.

d. Step 4
Fold the tips of the leaves until the leaves are triangular. Add steamed glutinous
rice to 3/4 full. Fold the remaining leaves thoroughly. Pin the leaves with sticks in
the last fold, so that the leaves do not come off when boiling. Do it until the
dough runs out.

e. Step 5
This is how to wrap a triangular-shaped “Kue Lukis”, the folding starts from the
tip of the bottom leaf that is the weakest yes and ends at the tip of the top leaf that
is the most rigid, try to close the corner2, so that the glutinous rice when boiled
does not come out.
f. Step 6
Boil water with 1/2 tsp salt until boiling. Put the wrapped sticky rice in boiling
water. Boil over low heat until it is cooked or about 2 hours. Remove from heat,
drain and let cool. Occasionally it is necessary to add water, if the water has
begun to shrink.

g. Step 7
While waiting for it is cooked, let's make brown sugar sauce and sprinkles.
Prepare the ingredients.

h. Step 8
Boil water together with brown sugar and pandan leaves. Boil until sugar
dissolves and thickens.

i. Step 9
Mix grated coconut with salt and pandan leaves. Roast the grated coconut until
cooked or lightly browned for approximately 20 minutes.

j. Step 10
Jaje Lukis is ready to be served with a sprinkling of grated coconut and brown
sugar sauce.

C. Serving
Kue Lukis is generally served at various events and celebrations in Bali, or even used as
souvenirs for tourists visiting this island. Some specific occasions or times where painted
cakes can be found include:
1. Religious Ceremonies: It may be served in various religious ceremonies and rituals in
Bali. The island has a rich culture filled with religious traditions and celebrations, and
typical foods are often an integral part of such events.
2. Wedding: It can be a unique option as a dessert or part of the dish in a wedding reception.
The shape and decoration of this cake can be adjusted to the theme of the wedding.
3. Feast Day: Like many cultures around the world, traditional cakes are often an important
part of holiday celebrations. It may be a typical dish in various celebrations such as Hari
Raya Nyepi, Galungan, Kuningan, and others.
4. Cultural Events: Various cultural events, such as traditional art performances, art
exhibitions, or festivals, often involve traditional food. It can be an interesting choice to
show and enjoy by visitors.
5. Souvenir: It is also often sold as typical Balinese souvenirs to tourists. Its unique shape
and décor make it an interesting and unique souvenir to take home.
