noticing his missing cloak, said simply that “Don’t weep, but rejoice:
she has chosen the better portion.” Pelagia secretly journeyed to
Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives, where she, disguised as the monk
Pelaguis, lived the ascetic life in a secluded cell, praying, fasting, &
attaining great spiritual gifts. Only Nonnus and his deacon knew her
true identity, until her death some years later. When it came time to
bury her, the other monks realized Pelagius was Pelagia, so the
Deacon James explained, telling her amazing story, which spread
throughout the land. He ended his written Life of St. Pelagia with a
prayer: “May the life of this harlot, this account of total conversion,
join us to her and bring us all to the mercy of the Lord on the day of
judgement, to whom be glory and power and honor to the ages of ages.
