Applied anatomy
• The 1st carpometacarpal joint can undergo
degenerative changes with age which is a
painful condition of the base of the thumb.
Applied anatomy
• The synovial lining of the
tendons of extensor
pollicis brevis and
abductor pollicis longus
can get inflamed due to
repetitive strain and can
lead to a painful condition
called De Quervain’s
tenosynovitis. Movement
of the thumb can
aggravate pain in this
condition.
Anatomical snuff box
• The anatomical
snuffbox is a triangular
depression on the
posterolateral side of
the wrist.

• It is seen best when

the thumb is extended.
