Introduction

1. OVERVIEW
In this course, we will highlight the changes and improvements of the new ARIS 9 compared to the ARIS version
7. This particular course was created for ARIS designers who have practical knowledge of ARIS 7 and who are
interested in the new ARIS 9 version and its differences towards version 7. In this first lecture, we give you an
overview of the new ARIS user interface and how you can customize your work environment.

2. USER INTERFACE
The graphic design of ARIS 9 is quite different to the one we are used to in ARIS 7. Apart from a different color
scheme, this new user interface has been designed to offer a better visibility and an improved focus on the
tasks at hand. The context menu is now leaner. Features are structured more logically and symbols are more
comprehensive.

[1] The new ARIS User Interface is operated through tabs. The explorer has its own tab, as has every newly
created model. The „new tab“is the start page when loading ARIS Designer or Architect.

[2] This is your workspace. Depending on the tab you have opened, various functions and perspectives apply.

[3] The bar on the bottom shows you the environment you are working on and the implied user rights you have
been given, and your status.

Introduction

[1] As already mentioned above, the new ARIS User Interface is operated through tabs. The explorer has its
own tab, as has every newly created model

[2] The „New tab“page offers the opportunity to search for a certain term within a selected database.

[3] The most recently used models are displayed under the sub-tab „Recently used“. You can also select model
favorites which are then displayed in the sub-tab „Favorites“. This feature is shown in more detail in the next
lecture.

[4] ARIS offers now a quick way to creating a new model, matrix or other documents with this handy panel. In
addition, model types you have recently created are listed for a quicker selection.

[5] The bar on the bottom shows you the environment you are working on and the implied user rights you have
been given.

3. SYMBOLS IN ARIS 9
As you might have already noticed, the symbols in ARIS 9 got a complete makeover.

The contrast between text and background is much more precise. Most of the symbols are now square and of
equal size. Through the strong coloring and meaningful icons, a clearer distinction can be made between
symbols which have previously been very similar in look. In addition, the optimized size of the symbols leaves
more room for text and allows for a neat layout.

4. THE ARIS APP-BUTTON

Under the App-Button „ARIS“, you can find several operating options.

[1] You can create a new model, matrix or other document under the option „New“.

[2] You can save either the model you are currently working on or all models which you have been opened.

[3] You can add a specific model to your favorites where it then will be displayed among the „Favorites“-tab in
the „New tab“.

[4] You can print your model or get a print preview. You can also configure your page setup.

[5] You can start querying by opening the search page.

[6] You can quickly select other pages such as Explorer or Administration.

[7] You can customize your view and settings under Select perspective and Options.

[8] Get help and find out about your personal ARIS version under Help, Enter error code, and About.

[9] Close ARIS with the option Exit.

5. THE TAB OVERVIEW

[1] In the top right hand corner, you can find this overview button. By clicking it, it will open the tab overview.

[2] The tab overview displays all the opened tabs. In our example we can see that the only tab that we have
currently opened is the Explorer tab. You can quickly switch to a certain tab just by clicking on the
corresponding field. This is particularly useful if you have opened a large number of models and would like to
quickly find and open a certain model.

[3] This is further facilitated through the search function which allows you to search the tabs for a specific term
to quickly find the tab you need.

[4] A very nice feature for this tab overview is the Mouse-over. It gives some details about the tab content in
the white box just by hovering over the tab field with your cursor.

6. PERSPECTIVE
You can customize your interface and your perspectives.

Go to the ARIS tab, then to „Select perspective“.

Introduction

The option „Select perspective“opens the Perspective Wizard. You can now enable and disable topics included
in your license.

After making your selection, you click „Next“.

Introduction

In a next step, you can customize your work environment by moving the slider. This will allow for a more
customized interface for your ARIS and simplifies your workspace while working with ARIS.

Please note that this feature allows you to minimize and maximize your perspective only. It has no influence on
your user rights. You can change your perspective settings anytime.

Once you have selected your view, click „Finish“.

If you look a little closer, you will see that you have now more or less features available to you – depending on
what you have selected as your perspective.
