PROGRESS REPORT
MICRO PROJECT
10 14th Seminar
2.0 Rationale:
Chrome OS, developed by Google, is an operating system designed with a singular focus on simplicity,
speed, and security. It leverages the cloud extensively, shifting much of the computing and storage
burden online. By predominantly running web applications, Chrome OS offers an intuitive, browser-
centric user experience, ideal for users who primarily engage with online content and webbased tools.
1. Finalized the group and discussed about the micro-project and finalized one of them.
2. Collected information regarding the implementation of the project.
3. Then submitted the project proposal to the guide.
4. All the team members started gathering information from different resources and then we discussed
about our topic “Introduction to Chrome OS”.
5. Then we started preparing the proposal and rough formats.
6. Then all the information and prepared formats were analysed.
7. Then we started preparing rough reports and showed it to our guide.
8. After making necessary changes we made the final report.
9. Submitted the project along with viva to the respected teacher.
Canonical was an early engineering partner on the project, and initially ChromiumOS could only be built
on an Ubuntu system. In February 2010, the ChromiumOS development team switched to Gentoo Linux
because Gentoo's package management system Portage was more flexible. The ChromiumOS build
environment is no longer restricted to any particular distribution, but installation and quick-start guides use
Debian's (and thus also Ubuntu's) apt syntax.
Cloud Integration
Chrome OS is tightly integrated with Google's cloud services, making it easy to access and sync files across
devices.
8.5 Chrome OS Security
Secure by Design
Chrome OS was designed with security in mind from the ground up. The operating system is built on a
Linux kernel and uses a sandboxing approach to isolate applications from one another. This means that if
one app is compromised, it cannot infect other apps or the underlying system.
Automatic Updates
Chrome OS devices receive automatic updates that include security patches and bug fixes. This ensures that
users are always protected against the latest threats and vulnerabilities.
Verified Boot
Chrome OS uses a feature called Verified Boot to ensure that the operating system has not been tampered
with. When a device boots up, it checks the integrity of the system files and only allows the device to boot
if everything is in order.
Encryption
Chrome OS supports encryption of user data, which means that even if a device is lost or stolen, the data
on it cannot be accessed without the user's password. Additionally, Chrome OS devices have a TPM
(Trusted Platform Module) chip that provides hardware-based security features.
8.6 Chrome OS v/s Other Operating Systems
Chrome OS is faster and more lightweight than Windows, making it ideal for low-end hardware.
Chrome OS relies heavily on cloud computing and web applications, while Windows has a more traditional
desktop application ecosystem.
Chrome OS is more secure than Windows, with automatic updates and sandboxing to prevent malware and
other security threats.
Mac OS has a larger selection of desktop applications than Chrome OS, although Chrome OS has a growing
number of web applications and Android apps available through the Google Play Store.
Chrome OS is more lightweight and faster than MacOS, making it ideal for low-end hardware and basic
computing tasks.
Chrome OS has a stronger focus on cloud computing and web applications, while Mac OS has a more
traditional desktop application ecosystem.
8.7 Advantages of Chrome OS
Security:
Sandboxing: Applications are sandboxed, preventing them from affecting other parts of the system.
Automatic Updates: Chrome OS regularly updates itself automatically, ensuring that users have the latest
security patches.
Application Ecosystem:
Web Apps: The primary focus is on web applications, allowing users to work seamlessly with online tools.
Android App Support: Chrome OS supports Android applications, significantly expanding the available
app ecosystem.
Low Maintenance:
Automatic Updates: Updates are applied automatically in the background, reducing the need for manual
maintenance.
Cost-Effective:
Affordable Hardware: Chromebooks are often more budget-friendly than traditional laptops, making them
accessible to a broad range of users.
Automatic Backup:
Automatic Syncing: User data and settings are often automatically synced with the cloud, providing a
backup and allowing for a consistent experience across devices.
8.8 Disadvantages of Chrome OS
Multitasking Challenges:
The multitasking experience on Chrome OS might be less robust compared to other operating systems. The
reliance on the Chrome browser and tab-based interface can sometimes lead to a cluttered experience.
Complex Applications:
Certain complex applications used in professional environments may not be available or fully functional
on Chrome OS. This includes some video editing software, design tools, or high-end gaming applications.
Education
Chrome OS is a popular choice in the education sector due to its affordability, ease of use, and security
features. Schools and universities can easily manage and deploy Chromebooks to students, allowing for a
seamless learning experience both in the classroom and at home. Chromebooks also come equipped with
Google's suite of productivity tools, making it easy for students to collaborate on projects and assignments.
Business
Chrome OS is gaining popularity in the business world due to its low cost and ease of management.
Companies can easily deploy and manage Chromebooks for their employees, saving time and resources.
Chromebooks also come equipped with productivity tools such as Google Docs and Sheets, making it easy
for employees to collaborate on projects. Additionally, Chrome OS's security features make it a safe choice
for businesses concerned with data protection.
Personal Use
Chrome OS is a great option for personal use, especially for those who primarily use their devices for
browsing the internet and accessing cloud-based applications. Chromebooks are affordable and easy to use,
making them a good choice for students, families, and anyone looking for a budget-friendly option.
Additionally, Chrome OS's security features make it a safe choice for personal use.
8.10 Conclusion
Throughout this deep study of Chrome OS, we have explored the many features and benefits of this
operating system, as well as its various use cases and future roadmap. We have seen how Chrome OS
compares to other operating systems and how it offers unique advantages, particularly in terms of security
and management.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, Chrome OS is well-positioned to meet the needs of modern
users and organizations. Its simplicity, speed, and security make it a compelling choice for a wide range of
applications, from education to enterprise.
