ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY – FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD/ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENTS

Each school year, this policy is to be read and signed by all PKG-12 students and their parents. It must be
signed and returned in order for a student to use the school computers and the CIS Online Applications
that includes email, wikis and blogs. This policy is to be followed both at school and at home. Any infraction
of this AUP will result in consequences that will be determined by the technology teacher, classroom
teacher and administration. The consequences are determined on a case-by-case basis and could include
a student not having the privilege of using school computers and/or CIS online applications for a period
of time.
Students: Please read this Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) carefully with your parent(s) before signing.

What is an AUP? It is a set of agreements that you must follow when using any technology in connection
with our CIS school community. This technology includes all electronic devices, computers, websites, our
school’s Edline, software and other resources that belong to school, or that you use inside or outside
school when you interact with our CIS school community.
Why an AUP? The purpose of this agreement is to make sure every member of our school community is
respected, safe and can take full advantage of the available technology for educational purposes. Students
will publish and contribute to CIS online communities using blogs, wikis and other educational interactive
websites.

Agreements:
The Internet gives us access to the global community. We must be respectful of all members of this
community, just as we are in our classroom and school community.

I will demonstrate respect, protect myself, and practice the principles of community when using
technology.

1. I will communicate with others in a respectful way.

2. I will only search for, view, create and share content that is appropriate*
3. I will tell a teacher or my parents if I see anything (a message, email, comment or other material) that
makes me uncomfortable or is inappropriate.
4. I will not pretend to be someone else when I am online.
5. I will use technology to build community, not to isolate, offend, or hurt others.
6. I will keep my passwords secret except for my parents and teachers.
7. I will only access my personal accounts and accounts assigned to me by my teachers. I will log out of
accounts that are not my own.

Community members take care of the school's technology resources so that everyone can enjoy and use
the resources to their full potential. I will demonstrate respect when using technology and the Internet. I
am responsible for all the content I create, download or store. Everything I do on the Internet can be viewed
or traced by others. There is no privacy online.
1. I will use proper citation for all content (such as images, music, videos, and written text).
2. I will only use software and programs that are already available on our school-owned devices and will not
download any programs/applications.
3. I will use email and chat at school for school related reasons.
4. I will not send or forward chain letters, mass email or spam.
5. Adults who work at my school or my parents can check the content of my computer, my Edline account,
email, electronic devices or storage device at any time. I will not change any settings that could affect the
access of work history.

I will treat school technology equipment with respect and care.

1. In the case of damage caused by negligence, I will be responsible for repairs or replacement to any
computers, laptops, or technologies.
2. I will not waste paper and ink by printing without permission.
3. I will keep original computer settings and only with permission from a teacher.
4. I will keep work areas clean and free from food and drink.

Student: I have read the above AUP and agree to follow these guidelines. I understand that failure to
follow this policy could result in a loss of technology and/or Internet privileges. I will take responsibility
for my behaviour and I will accept the consequences determined by the school.
