Lecture 3 – IC Engine Components
1. Engine Block/Cylinder Block
• It is a container fitted with piston where the fuel is burnt and power is produced.
• It is one of the most important part of an engine in which the piston moves to and fro in order
to develop power.
• Its main function is to guide piston
2. Cylinder Head
• It comprises inlet and exhaust valves, spark plug, fuel injectors
• Its main function is to seal the cylinder block and not to allow entry and exit of gases in cover
head valve engine
4. Piston Rings
• Compression rings prevent the leakage of compressed gases into the lower portion
• Oil rings provide efficient seal to prevent leakage of oil into the engine cylinder
Its main function is to reduce the friction between moving parts.
• The part in which cylinders are attached and contains crankshaft and crankshaft bearings
• Sometimes it is called oil sump
• All the oil for lubrication is placed in it
• Are used to control the inlet and exhaust of IC engines
• Number of valves depends on the number of cylinders. Two valves are used for each
cylinder- one for inlet of air-fuel mixture and another for exhaust of combustion gases
• Its main function is to supply fuel-air mixture and collect the exhaust gases equally from all
cylinders.
• It is used to control the opening and closing of valves at proper timing.
• It is used to maintain speed fairly constant
• It is turned by storing excess energy during the power stroke
