Course Policy ME354A: Vibration & Control

3L-0T-1P-0A (10 Credits)

Objectives: This course will introduce the students to the concepts of vibrations in single and multi-degree of
freedom systems, approximate methods, and classical control theory. The course also includes laboratory
sessions.
Course contents (Pre-requisite ESO209): The course has two components: (i) In-class lectures and (ii)
Laboratory sessions. The description of topics to be covered in the classroom lectures are as follows:
Part – 1: Introduction to modeling of dynamical systems. Single Degree of Freedom Systems (SDOF) – Free
undamped vibration, Free damped vibration, Forced vibration, Transmissibility, Convolution method,
Mechanisms of damping. Two-DOF systems (undamped vibration only) – Free and forced vibrations, vibration
absorber. Multi-DOF Systems (undamped and proportional damping) – Matrix methods, Modal analysis.
Approximate Methods. Vibration of continuous systems (free vibration only).
Part – 2: Introduction to controls. Review of Laplace transforms. Block diagrams. Root locus method. Stability
– Routh-Hurwitz criterion, Nyquist and Bode plots. Controller performance and types. Steady state errors and
constants. Feedback control systems – Derivative error compensation, Integral error compensation, Proportional
error compensation. Introduction to modern control theory.

An assignment sheet will be issued every week and the solutions will be posted in the week following it.
Assignments will not be graded. However, you are encouraged to solve all the problems yourself to score well
in quizzes and exams.
Details of lecture and lab TAs and office hours will be intimated in due course.
Cheating in quizzes, lab report preparation, and in exams will obviously fail you. Formula sheet may be
provided in exams!
