Answer these questions before beginning the lab. Be sure to turn them in when you
submit your lab report.

1. What does stressing an equilibrium system mean? How is stress applied?

When you alter something in a reaction at equilibrium, chemists say that you put
stress on the equilibrium. When this occurs, the reation will no longer be in
equilibrium and the reaction itself will begin changing the concentratinos of
reactants and products until the reaction comes to a new position of equilibrium.

2. The reversible reaction for the pH indicator bromophenol blue is

(C19H8Br4O5S)H– (C 19H8Br4O5S)2– + H+. Write the equilibrium expression for this
reaction.

Keq = ¿ ¿

3. What direction do you predict the addition of an acid to the solution containing
bromophenol blue will drive the equilibrium? Explain your prediction in terms of
Le Châtelier's principle. Hint: Think about what the addition of an acid does to the
concentration of H+ ions.

Addition of an acid to the solution containing bromophenol blue will drive the
equilibrium to the reactant side. According to the Le Chatelier’s principle, the
equilibrium to shifts to the opposite direction to release the stress.

4. What direction do you predict the addition of a base to the solution containing
bromophenol blue will drive the equilibrium? Explain your prediction in terms of
Le Châtelier's principle.
Addition of a base to the solution, equilibrium will shift to the product side
because OH- will react with H+. The [H+] will decrease. The equilibrium will shift
to the right to produce more[H+] to re-establish equilibrium.
