Apoptosis Flow Chart

There are two main pathways of apoptosis: the extrinsic pathway triggered by TNF or FAS receptors, and the intrinsic pathway triggered by DNA damage or ER stress. The extrinsic pathway involves TRADD and FADD proteins inducing caspase 8/10. The intrinsic pathway involves changes in Bcl-2 family proteins, release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, formation of the apoptosome with caspase 9, and activation of caspase 3/6/7, leading to apoptosis. Initiator caspases activate executioner caspases to carry out apoptosis.
