device is not accepted. Typed solution is not accepted.

• All assignments are individual works. Keep your original hardcopy for checking.

• Scan your finished assignment as a single pdf file with file size less than 100 MB (no other
file format is accepted). The file should be named as “Student Name_ES_A2.pdf”, e.g.
“Chan Tai Man_ES_A2.pdf”

• Submit your pdf document to SOUL class link before 17 March (Friday) 23:59.
Mark deduction will be applied for late submission as follow:
Submission on 18 March (Saturday): -20%
Submission on 19 March (Sunday): -50%
Submission on or after 20 March (Monday): 0 marks

document must be submitted for sick leave application.
Full marks: 30 marks
Show your calculations. Correct your answer to 4 decimal places when applicable.

Question 1 (14 marks)

A circular spinner has four numbers (10, 20, 30 and 40) marked on it. If the spinner is rolled, the
value indicated by the pointer is a random variable X.

(a) A student investigated the spinner and claimed that the probability distribution of X is given
below:

(c) An electronic shop organized a promotion event. Customers could roll the spinner once. The
value indicated by the pointer is the discount percent (e.g. 10 for 10% discount) applied to the
home appliance with marked price $300 or above. Suppose a cooker is marked at $500.
(i) Express the selling price S of the cooker in terms of X.
(ii) Hence, find the expectation and the standard deviation of the selling price S of the
cooker.

Question 2 (16 marks)

The observatory of a city studied the weather condition in winter. A series of weather data was
recorded.
(a) For each of the following data collected, state whether it is numerical or categorical variable
and further indicate it is discrete, continuous, nominal or ordinal.
(i) Number of days having severe snow.
(ii) The intensity of snowfall (i.e. light, moderate, heavy).
(iii) The lowest temperature (in ℃) in each day.

(b) Based on the past records, the probability of a day having severe snow is 0.06. Given that a
day having severe snow is independent to the other days. Find the probability that in a given
week:
(i) there will be 0 day with severe snow.
(ii) there will be 3 or more days with severe snow.
