Religion’s doctrine on Patriotism and Nationalism

The greatest resemblance of Spanish colonization of the Philippines was to

introduce the existence of Roman Catholic and eventually spread the beliefs of faith
among Filipino people including me. It became an orthodox of churches that integrated
Filipino culture, beliefs, rites and traditions however, doctrines of Roman Catholic
incorporated base on the testaments of the bible in which it derives the history, origin of
the sin and universal morality. One of the major doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church
is its universal character. It is a worldwide institution that transcends national
boundaries and aspires to incorporate people from all walks of life and all corners of the
globe. Catholicism believes that believers' fundamental identity is as God's children and
members of a global community of faith.
But does roman catholic patronize the love of one’s country and exile the expression of
loyalty to the nation? Or it opposes and contradict?
Patriotism and nationalism are complicated and interconnected notions that have
shaped the history of nations and communities. These notions have been the topic of
theological reflection and ethical questions within the Roman Catholic Church. The
teachings of the Church on patriotism and nationalism are anchored in its broader moral
and social doctrine, which emphasizes human dignity, solidarity, and the promotion of
the common good.
Nationalism is a powerful dimension of a one’s country it involves heartfelt of
patriotism and dispassion of faith. And often implies the national identity of one’s citizen
to a particular nation. It encompasses distinctive sectors of domain it could be in
Christianity, secular, or in state, but the main focus here is that Roman Catholic
embodied Christian Nationalism. As a Christian it relies on the universal good
perspective that focuses on the universal values of the human being. According to
Saint Augustine, the nations is treated as a spiritual community. The content of the
nation bond is love, which means is subjective depend on human reason and will. This
connotation agreed upon the steadfast – the patriotism and the love of the country.
It includes a fondness for familiar locations, a fondness for familiar people, and a
fondness for familiar ideas. The term "country" refers to all three of these things: the
land itself, the people who live on it, and the traditions linked with it. a person's "native
land". It is a sentimental value that urges people to serve their community with
dedication of sacrifices in the country. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes
patriotism as a virtue when it is built in love and respect for the ideals and principles that
promote the common good. In essence, patriotism can be viewed as a virtue that
coincides with the Church's teachings on social justice.
When we kept within the law of aggressions of Christ has been a paramount of
the Catholic church and Roman council have made their inculcation to serve and have
duties in God in which it influences the duties justice, and charity to owe mankind. This
concept is natural absorption to human being that reminds us the true essence of
patriotism and an extreme nationalism. For instances, if we don’t treat all mankind as
our brother and sister, no equal treaties and opportunity to live in prosperity,
disassociate of universal morality this may exalt a nation to an enormous chaos and
wars. Through a Divine doctrine of the church it embraces all distinctions of people in
order to control them in true peace of gospel, the gospel is promoting a common ground
of welfare of humanity. The gospel of God neutralizes and nurture the different view and
interest of the states.
The fusion perspective of patriotism and nationalism have a common good to
Christian ethics to play a vital role in human society it builds compassions of
understanding, beliefs and unity among different ethnic group of people. The
consciousness of nationalism and patriotism conforms under the concepts of
brotherhood and fatherhood to respect each other and Christians expected to patriotic
in the proper sense of nations. Therefore, Roman Catholic doctrine must not assume a
conceited and vain attitude toward foreign nations. Above all, it must not become a
religion in and of itself. Rather, it is must mix and purify natural love with love of the
supernatural, love of one's own country with regard for different countries. It must be
guided both inside and outside. Moreover, The Roman Catholic theology on patriotism
and nationalism emphasizes the relevance of patriotism and nationalism when
anchored in principles of justice and the common good. While patriotism can be a noble
expression of love for one's homeland, the Church discourages strong nationalism that
encourages division and exclusivity. The worldwide aspect of Catholicism inspires
Christians to fight for the welfare of their nations while also acknowledging their
membership in a global community of faith and solidarity. Balancing patriotism with
broader Catholic faith beliefs is a moral necessity that tries to achieve a just and
peaceful world for all.
Finally, by the highest Christian values of justice and mercy charity. It must
balance the specific responsibilities of national politics. With the broad requirement of
international friendship comes patriotism. It must safeguard and advance the universal
mission of Christian religion, its central divine agency, which is both national and
worldwide, as well as supranational.
