Makeshift PSU
Billy McFarland GM6DX describes how to repurpose a
PC power supply for amateur radio use.
Before we progress ensure thatthe PSUIs NOT
connected tothe mains electrical supply,
the kettle lead is nat connected and plugged
in. The fist stepis to open up the cove ofthe
PSU, Remove the serews onthe upper cover.
Be sureyou select the correct screws and that
youarenot unscrewing the ones holding the
fanin place. These screws canbe seen nig.
2, Now you need to cut the warranty seal as
seen in Fig. 3. Some PSUs have the DC power
leads going tothe fan on one side of the PCB
‘meaning you can it the cover off and sititto
the side allowing access to the PCB within the
PSU, Others have the transformer on one side
and fan power cables onthe other. This means
that you need to cut the power cables tothe fan
and rejoin later in order toremove the cover
‘toone sidefor PCB access. This wllreally
{depend on which make and model of PSU you
have purchase.

ofthe PSU. Take some sharp scissors or
‘snips and cut the wires leaving about 150mm
‘of cable protruding outof the boxes seen in
Fig 4. After you have rimmed the cable feed

‘aPSU inwhich he cables are mult-coloured
