Activity No. 1_____
FIND THE CENTER
I. Objective:
1. Locate the epicenter of an earthquake using Triangulation Method.
II. Materials:
Philippine Map, drawing compass, pencil
III. Procedure
1. Study the data showing the difference in the arrival time of P-wave and S-wave on the seismic recording
stations.
Recording Time difference in P- Distance of epicenter Distance on the Map=
Stations wave and S-wave from seismic stations Scale: 100 km = 1cm
(in seconds) (in Km)
Manila 1440 sec
Puerto Princesa 6400 sec
Masbate 3920 sec
2. Compute the distance of the epicenter from each of the recording station using this formula:
Time Difference
Distance of Epicenter ¿ seismic station= x 100 %
8 seconds

3. Choose the recording station and measure the computed distance on the map scale.
4. Center your compass on the station and draw a circle.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the rest of recording stations. You should get three circle that intersect or nearly
intersect at a point. This intersection is the EPICENTER.

Guide Questions:
1. Where is the epicenter of this hypothetical earthquake? ________________________________________

2. What difficulty will you encounter if you only have data from two recording stations?

3. What is the distance of the epicenter from the seismic station?__________________________________

4. What do you think is the importance of determining the epicenter of an earthquake?
