Activity 1.3: Locating the Epicenter of an Earthquake

Objective: Locate the epicenter of an earthquake
Materials: worksheets, compass with pencil, travel time curve graph
Procedure:
1. In finding the location of the quake’s epicenter, the triangulation method is used. To use the triangulation method,
you must determine first S-P interval, the distance of the quake’s epicenter in kilometers, and then using the
compass with pencil draw a circle around where the station is located using the indicated scale of the map.
2. Determine the S-P time interval from the given seismogram.

Pusan Seismic Station S-P Interval = seconds

Tokyo Seismic Station S-P Interval = seconds

Akita Seismic Station S-P Interval = seconds

3. Determine the epicentral distance. Complete the table.
Epicentral
Station S-P Interval
Distance
Pusan ___seconds KM
Tokyo ____seconds KM
Akita ____seconds KM
4. Given the data, triangulate the location of the epicenter.
