AY 102 – QUIZ 1

Total time : 30 min

Maximum marks : 30

Instructions :
1. write your name, CWID and lab section on the top right corner of the answer sheet.
2.Use a pencil!
3.Please show the math steps clearly.
4.Draw neat diagrams with a ruler.
5. No use of mobile phones. Use a calculator if needed.

1. Draw a diagram of the celestial globe with the following labelled –

i. celestial equator
ii. ecliptic
iii. right ascension lines
iv. declination lines
v. north and south pole with their declination angles
vi. What is the angle made by the ecliptic with the celestial equator?

2. On June 21, the sun will be high in the sky at noontime in Tuscaloosa. This date is known in the
Northern Hemisphere as the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ , the official start of the summer season. On this date,
the Sun appears to travel a longer distance through the sky, causing more daylight hours. Around
_ _ _ _ _ _ , the opposite situation occurs: the winter solstice which features the shortest length of
daylight, the lowest “noontime” sun and the longest period of nighttime.

3. Look at the diagram below and identify the special name given to the two different positions of
the sun. SUN

SUN

4. If the latitude of Paris is approximately 48º N, find the declination range for stars that will never
rise and that are circumpolar (never set).

5. Draw a ray diagram and indicate where the image will be formed. Label the focal length (f),
image distance (v) and the object distance (u). Is the image real and inverted or virtual and erect?
2F F F 2F

6. The image distance (v) is 15 cm and the object distance (u) is 100 mm. Calculate the focal length
of the lens. (Hint: convert both u and v into same units before calculating the focal length).

7. There are two objective lenses of focal lengths (f0) 5 cm and 15 cm. There is an eyepiece of focal
length (fe)2 cm. Calculate the magnification produced by the longer and shorter objective lens
f0
when combined with the eyepiece. Which one gives the higher magnification? M = .
fe
8. Identify the name of each type of spectrum when you look at the following light sources-

i. a filament bulb
ii. spectral tube of hot gas,
iii. blue frosted bulb

9. You see a red colored star and a blue colored star. Which of the two is hotter? The spectrum of
the red star is blueshifted and the spectrum of the blue star is redshifted. So, which star is moving
towards earth and which is moving away?

10. The average doppler shift in mm for Fe I line is 0.75 mm. The scale calculation in
(Angstroms/mm) is 0.07. Calculate the doppler shift in Angstroms. Also calculate the rotation speed
and rotation period of the sun in days.

i. Doppler shift in Angstroms = Doppler shift in mm X scale

doppler shift
ii. Rotation speed of sun= x 300000 km/s. [ Use the doppler shift calculated
6300
above]
4000000
iii. Rotation period= . This gives the answer in seconds. To convert it
rotation speed of sun
into days, divide the answer by 86400 seconds, as 1 day has 86400 seconds.
