Identify faults in farm

equipment and facilities

using preventive
maintenance

Types of defective farm equipment:
1. Manufacturing defects
2. Design defects
MANUFACTURING DEFECTS
This occurs when mistakes during the
assembly process cause loose or missing
fasteners and other defects.
2
DESIGN DEFECTS
When a company designs equipment
without proper safety guards, shut-off
switches, and protective enclosures
agricultural workers are at risk.

3
1. Pinch points
Points at which two objects on the
machine make contact with at least
one of them moving in the circle.

A pinch point or pinch point hazard

is a common class of mechanical
hazard where injury or damage may
4
be done by one or more objects
moving towards each other, crushing
or shearing
whatever comes
between them.

5
2. Wrap points
Any exposed, rotating machine
component attached at one end to a
piece of equipment.
Any type of rotating machine
component can be considered a wrap
point. The rotating components are
often shafts such as the power take-
6
off (PTO). People can be caught
by loose clothing or long hair. PTO
shafts turn extremely fast and you
can get caught faster than you can
react.

7
3. Shear points
The edges of two objects moving
close enough together to cut
relatively soft material create shear
point.

A shear point hazard exists when the

edges of two machine parts move
8
across each other or move closely
enough together to cut another
object or move a relatively soft
material. In a typical shear point
hazard, one part moves while the
other part is either
stationary or
moving.
9
4. Freewheeling points
After a farmer turns of the
equipment, farm equipment parts,
such as a rotary motor
blades and flywheels
continue to rotate.

5. Hydraulic lifts and hoses

Leaky hydraulic hoses can emit toxic

fluids that can burn your eyes and
skin.
