I need a computer for my work. I also have a smartphone, and it goes with
me everywhere. So, I’m on an electronic device for about six hours a day. But
some people don’t use technology much. Why is that?
First, some people – my grandfather is a good example – don’t want to be
on the Internet twenty-four hours a day. They like to have time when people
can’t call them, so they don’t need a cell phone. A typical family has four or
more ways to get online – computers, a smart television, a tablet, one phone
each! My grandfather uses the phone he bought in 1988, before smartphones
existed!
Second, more people think that the Internet is not a safe place. They are
not happy because they think big companies want to use our personal
information for bad things.
Finally, some people think technology is bad for us. People in the U.S. look
at a computer, phone, or TV screen for about twelve hours a day. We don’t
speak to each other, so the world is an unfriendly place, according to them.
What about you? Do you agree with any of these reasons?

S: Hey Tom. I’ve got a question for you. Can you dance?
T: Hey, you know I can’t dance!
S: I’m sorry. But do you want to learn?
T: No, I don’t. I hate dancing. Why do you ask anyway?
S: Because on today’s Learning Curve podcast people talk about big things
they can’t do. Things they want to learn.
T: Sounds interesting, Sam. So, do you want to learn to cook?
S: Hey, what do you mean? I can cook!
T: Hmm ... Let’s listen to what these four people can’t do.
L: Hi. My name is Lorenzo. Well, it’s a good question because this is a big
problem for me. I have a car, but I can’t drive! I want to learn, but the
lessons are really expensive. My friends go to the beach every weekend,
but I can’t go with them. I can ride a bike, but it’s too far to go by bike.
B: Hi. I’m Beatrice. My problem is I can’t sing. Everyone always says to
me, “It’s OK, a lot of people can’t sing.” But I really can’t sing. It’s funny
because I can dance really well. Sometimes I try to sing at parties. I see
other people sing and I think, “Come on Beatrice, it’s easy!“ But I try to
sing and ... oh, it’s horrible!
Z: Hello. I’m Zoe and there is something very important that I can’t do. I
can’t swim. It’s funny because I live by the sea! My daughter loves
swimming and she often asks me, “Mom, can we go swimming?“ and I
say, “No dear, not today.” It makes me very sad. Of course, I want to learn,
but I’m scared.
R: Hello. My name is Roberto and I can’t speak Portuguese very well. I can
speak English, and I can speak Spanish, of course ... I’m from Colombia. I
really want to learn Portuguese, but I don’t want a teacher. I like learning
things from the Internet. I can say some words. I can say “Hello. Do you
want to have coffee with me?“ I sometimes say it to Brazilians when I
meet them. But I can’t understand what they say!
