INTRODUCTION
Some common alloys :-
1. Amalgam
An alloy of mercury is called an amalgam. Most metals are soluble
in Mercury but some are not. Amalgams are commonly used in
dental feelings because they have been relatively cheap easy to use
and durable. In addition I will till recently they have been regarded
as safe. They are made by mixing Mercury with silver copper tins
and other metals. The Mercury content of dental fillings has
recently state controversy based on the potentially harmful effects
of mercury.

Mercury amalgams have also been used in the process of mining

gold and silver because of the ease of which Mercury amalgamates
with them. In addition thalium amalgam is used as the liquid
material in thermometers because it freezes at minus 58 degree
Celsius where is pure Mercury freezes at - 38 degree Celsius.

2. Brass
a decorative brass paper weight along with zinc copper samples.
Glass is the term used for alloys of copper and zinc in a solid
solution. It has a yellow colour somewhat similar to gold. It was
produced in prehistoric times long before zinc was discovered by
melting copper with calamine an zinc ore. The amount of zinc in
bras very strong 5 to 45% creating a range of brasses each with
unique properties. By comparison bronze is principally and alloy of
copper and tin.

Despite this distinction some types of process are called bronzes.

Brass is relatively resistance to tanishing and is often used as
decorative purposes. It's malleability and acoustic properties have
made it the metal of choice for musical instrument such as that tuba
trumpet and euphonium.

All those saxophone and harmoniums are made up of brass the

saxophone is it wood wind instrument and the harmonica a free read
erophone in organ files design as reed pipes brass trips and as used
as the reed.

Aluminium makes grass stronger and more corrosion resistance. It

forms are transparent self healing protective layer of Aluminium
oxide of the surface and tin has a similar effect and find its use
special in sea water applications. Combinations of iron aluminium
silicon and manganese makes brass resistance to wear and tear.

3. Bronze
Bronze refers to abroad range of copper alloys usually within as the
main additive but sometimes with other elements such as
Phosphorus manganese aluminium or silicon. Typically bronze is
about 60% copper and 40% tin. The use of bronze was particularly
significant for early civilizations leading to the name of Bronze age.
Tools weapons are more and bending material such as decorative
tiles were made of they were found to be harder and more durable
than their store and copper predecessors.

In early used the natural impurity arsenic sometimes created a

superior natural alloy called arsenical bronze.Though not a
strongest Steel bronze is superior to iron in nearly every application.
It is considerately less brittle then iron and has a lower casting
temperature. Several bronze alloy regest corrosion and metal
fatigue better than Steel the also conduct heat and electricity better
than most steels.

Bronze has my myriad uses in industry. It is also widely used for

cast metals sculpture and is the most popular metal for top quality
bells. Commercial bronze otherwise known as brass is 90% copper
and 10% zinc it also contains no tin.

Preparation of alloys
Alloys are prepared from the techniques of fusion
competition or simultaneous electrodecomposition.
Generally the components are mixed together in proper
properties in a fuse clay crucial melted and stead with a piece
of charcoal to award oxidation. The molten mixture is now
allowed to cool. When an alloy is obtained example process
prepared by above method.

Analysis of an alloy
The complete analysis of an alloy involves 2 steps:-
 Qualitative analysis
This involves identification of the components of the
alloys.
 Quantitative analysis
This involves determination of the components of the
alloy. It involves the separation of the components from the
alloy quantitatively followed by determination of percentage
of each component volume metrically or gravimatrically.

Objectives of the project

In this project our aim is to know the various metals

present in the given sample of alloy.
