Mycorrhiza and Lichens as Two Models of
Fungal Symbiosis
Background
⧫ Fungi have formed many close relationships with other
organisms, including both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. One
of these types of relationships is mutualism, where both
organisms benefit from the interaction. The most common
mutualistic relationships involving fungi are mycorrhiza
and lichens.
⧫ Many studies have been done to learn more about these
symbiotic relationships, but there is still some debate about
them. Therefore, this article aims to explain the significance
of two fascinating fungal symbioses, mycorrhizae and
lichens. Highlighting such relations can help in
understanding such sophisticated models and important
compounds produced as a result of these interaction.
Methods
⧫ This article is a literature review, which means that the
authors have summarized and analyzed previous research on
mycorrhiza and lichens. They have also conducted their own
in-depth research on these topics.
⧫ In other words, the authors have gathered information from
other sources (books, articles, etc.) and combined it with
their own findings to write this article. This is a common
way to write about scientific topics, as it allows the authors
to build on the work of others and to present a
comprehensive overview of the topic.
Results
⧫ This article examines or analyzes thoroughly and
completely the nature, basic characteristics, and
specifications or peculiarities of mycorrhiza and lichen.
Furthermore, the related article also explains the existence
of chemical signals, secondary metabolites, and other
biological and chemical aspects of lichen.
⧫ The final part of the article itself focuses on discussing a
number of pharmaceutical uses of lichen extract which
include antitumor, antimutagenic, antioxidant and
antimicrobial activities. This implies the concrete potential
for using lichen as an alternative raw material for medicines.
Conclusions
⧫ Mycorrhiza and lichens are ubiquitous and have important
traditional medicinal uses around the world. They also have
a wide range of other applications, including as food and
animal feed, dyes, air quality and climate change indicators,
and pharmaceuticals.
⧫ Further research on mycorrhiza and lichens and their
metabolites is needed to fully realize the benefits of these
valuable symbiotic relationships between fungi and algae
and plants.
