The Ring of Fire

An eclipse, either the moon eclipse (0) and the sun eclipse, is a natural phenomenon.
A total sun eclipse or solar eclipse is a frightening experience to certain people (1) which
do not have any knowledge of Science. Indeed, it can be scary to watch the sun (2) slow
disappears during the day and the sky becomes dark within minutes. This can happen
when the Sun, Moon and Earth are (3) align as in a total eclipse. In total eclipse, the moon
totally covers the (4) layer of the sun whereas in partial and annular eclipses, only part
of the Sun (5) are obscured. The last solar eclipse of 2019 which occurred on Thursday,
26th of December, is an annular eclipse. An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and
Moon, are being in line with the Earth. However, the size of the Moon is (6) small than
that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the
dark disk of the Moon. The ring (7) glowing red, yellow and orange, thus so-called the
“ring of fire”. This time, people in the Eastern Hemisphere, along a path 118 kilometres

Many people usually have a few fridge magnets stuck on the door of (0) our
refrigerators. Fridge magnets are always popular souvenirs and people will keep them
as mementoes of their travels. Have you ever (1) think how the fridge magnets are able
to stick on the fridge? A magnet (2) are an object that can produce a magnetic field.
The magnetic field is invisible (3) and it has the power to pull other objects towards
itself. However, the magnet only (4) attract objects made of nickel, iron and cobalt. A
magnet (5) had two poles, known as the North pole and the South pole. When there
are two magnets, the opposite poles will attract (6) or the similar poles will repel each
other. The reason that the fridge magnets are able to be on the door of the refrigerator is
(7) - invisible magnetic fields of each magnet. In addition, refrigerators must have been
made (8) with either nickel, iron or cobalt. Therefore, people use the magnets to place
notes on the door of the refrigerator, where they can definitely be seen.

A Visit to the National Planetarium

“Twinkle, twinkle little stars……..’ . I heard a few children singing the evergreen nursery
rhyme as I walked home last week. The rhyme triggered an interest for me to learn more about
the stars.
“Dad, I heard that stars have different names and different shapes,” I started my
conversation. My father looked up and was surprised with my statement. “I’m sorry, Fiona. I myself
do not know much about it. Let’s go to the National Planetarium and learn something,” he said.
The National Planetarium, officially opened in 1994 is a special institution in terms of history
and science. It was built with the intention to instil the knowledge of space science into the public
as well as to establish a formal platform for scientific studies and research.
As promised, my family and I visited the planetarium one Saturday morning. We discovered
the many interesting activities and programmes to entertain the visitors are suitable for both
children and also adults who want to know more about the universe and the galaxy.
In the main hall are permanent exhibits related to space science. I saw Arianne IV, a space
engine which was also one of the engines used to launch MEASAT 1, the first satellite that Malaysia
sent into space. There was also a display of the many collections of memorabilia about the first
Malaysian astronaut.
In the second hall, visitors will get to experience the life of an astronaut. I was thrilled to
be able to feel that experience inside a mock-up of spaceship. I just cannot imagine using ‘an
outer space toilet’ and trying to stack blocks while wearing enormous space gloves. We also had
the opportunities to snap a few photos there!

4
Another attraction of this planetarium is a theatre that can screen space shows and large
format films. For just half an hour, the show is very informative for the viewers. There is also a

special projector in this room which shines images on the domed ceiling and shows the stars and
other objects in the night sky. Visitors will be able to sit in comfort as the seats can be reclined
so they can enjoy the film on the screen.

The Telephone
Most people know that Alexander Graham Bell was the inventor of the telephone
because he was first awarded the patent for an “apparatus for transmitting vocal or other
sounds telegraphically”. However, history also mentioned Johann Philipp Reis, Antonio Meucci
and Elisha Gray were among the people who should also be given credit for their work in the
same field.
Before telephone, telegraph was already used as a way of communication using Morse
code. However, only one message could be sent and received at one particular time. Bell knew
about sound and music well which enabled him to improve the telegraph and later, succeeded
in inventing the telephone. He and his partner, Thomas Watson, worked together in finding
4

ways to transmit human voice electrically. They carried out experiments to find how multiple
messages can be carried on a single wire. The final breakthrough was when Bell could hear
Test

a sound over the wire during one of his experiments. Then, using the device he called, “Mr.
Watson, come here, I need you.”
The early telephones were a far cry from what they are today. Technologies in the
telephone industry have changed so much that people nowadays are able to enjoy the benefits.
Now with the Internet and smartphones, we can communicate with people living on
the other side of the globe. Many of us shop in the comfort of our homes or get connected
with friends through social media. Although many people argue the negative impacts of the
telephone, its invention made changes in our lives. They do have both negative and positive
effects on our lives, but definitely they are going to stay.

The World of Plants

Botany, which is the scientific study of plants is indeed a vast area. Let us learn some
basic facts about these special living things. Some of them are called trees, palms, herbs,
bushes or vines. We can eat plants like vegetables and herbs but many are not suitable for
human consumption. Some plants have flowers, some do not. Some produce edible fruits
and some grow succulent roots.
A plant can grow from a seed, which can be big or very tiny. First, the seed has

4
to be planted into soil. It contains food to supply the seedling with necessary nutrients
before it is able to make its own food. This happens when the growing plant has its roots

Test
and leaves.
Many people love flowers because they are not only beautiful but colourful,
too. Flowers become tourist attractions in some countries like Japan and Netherlands.
The attraction in Japan is the ‘sakura’ or the pink cherry blossoms while tulips are the
magnificent views not to be missed in the Dutch country.
In a plant, a flower has a function of its own. It is supposed to attract bees, butterflies
and small birds. The birds and the insects are agents that help the plant to reproduce new
plants through pollination. During pollination, the insects and birds transfer the pollen of
the flowers from the anther to the stigma, which are among the different parts of a flower.
Other parts include its sepal, petals, pistil, and filament. Without flowers, a plant cannot
produce the seeds to continue the lifecycle of each plant. Therefore, the next time you see
flowers or eat a fruit, remember that they exist for a reason.

Modern Inventions
I remembered a poem that I read in an English workbook that belonged to my elder sister. The poem
‘Heir Conditioning’ by G. Shanmughalingam was about a boy asking his grandfather about the life before
technology and he wondered how his grandparents had survived that time. For the boy, he could not imagine
himself living without the inventions of modern technology like air conditioners and telephones.
Living in the world nowadays, most of us like the boy in the poem, take modern inventions for granted.
They have been around since we were born. They bring us comfort and make life easier. They have become
very important in our daily life that without these things, we may not be able to function as great as with the
help of the things that have been improved by Science and Technology.
The Internet is one of the necessities in modern life. Without the Internet, a lot of things will be set back
until the system is restored. In fact, almost everything goes online now. People can do banking transactions,
send emails, apply for jobs, book tickets and even shopping. They can also update themselves on news,
read books, watch films and even learn new skills.
The development of Science and Technology is amazing. Most inventors, scientists and researches
keep on creating or improving things. A mobile phone a few years ago has become a smart phone which can
be used as a computer, a camera as well as to communicate with other people. Robotic technologies enable
faster productions in manufacturing industries and recently, they have invented robots to help at home and
serve people in restaurants.
Many other fields also benefit from this modern development. In agriculture, improvement is seen
in many sectors such as in machines as well as the crops. Transportation enables faster travelling and
engineering sectors are rapidly changing, too. Despite getting advantages of the modern technologies, it is

4
quite difficult for some people to stay abreast with these changes, especially the older generation. Just like
Grandfather in the poem who said that all the development would have caused global warming and more

Photosynthesis
by Farhan bin Kassim
When we feel hungry, we usually eat food which can be animal or plant based. Animals
also get their sources of food from other animals or plants. Plants eat too, but they are unique
living things because they can make their own ‘food’. The process of making food in plants is
called photosynthesis, performed by all plants, algae, and even some microorganisms.
How does a plant carry out this process to make a food molecule? Plants need sunlight,
water, and carbon dioxide which is produced by all breathing organisms. It enters the plants
through tiny holes in leaves, flowers, branches, stems, and roots. The light energy from the sun
causes a chemical reaction that breaks down the molecules of carbon dioxide and water which
is then being reorganised to make glucose, a type of sugar and oxygen. The gas is released into
the atmosphere through similar tiny holes that absorb carbon dioxide.
Another important element in photosynthesis is pigments. There are three types of
pigments. Chlorophylls are green-coloured pigments that trap blue and red light. The red, orange

or yellow-coloured pigments that absorb bluish-green light are called carotenoids. The last one
is called phycobilins. These are either red or blue pigments seen in cyanobacteria and red algae.
The light that cannot be absorbed well by chlorophylls and carotenoids is taken by phycobilins.
In sustaining the supply of clean air, it is important for the existence of trees and plants
because the process of photosynthesis benefits humans and animals. The oxygen produced
during the process is necessary for the survival of almost all living things.

Technology and Us
by Rohana binti Ismail
We now live in a modern world filled with many great inventions, a result of development
in Science and Technology. They are certainly an advantage to us because we can lead an
easy and comfortable life. Most of the gadgets and appliances that we have today have
become a necessity instead of a luxury. Using them will save time and energy.
Before gas and electric cookers, women used firewood to cook and boil water. Imagine
lighting the fire every time you want to cook. Just like when we go on camping trips. If you
do not have the skill, the fire will not burn the wood. When there is a nice fire, you need to
know how to control it so you will not eat burnt food. How easy life is now that we have rice
cookers, kettle jugs, microwave ovens, blenders and washing machines. Those are among
the appliances that many cannot survive without.
Bicycles used to be a transport but now many people ride them mostly for sports
and recreational purposes. Cars and motorcycles are more convenient because they can
take us anywhere we want faster. Known as bullet trains, these high-speed trains enable
people to commute from one city to another very fast. However, they are available in certain
countries that include Japan and Europe. After many trials, the Wright brothers became the
first people who had been successful in flying their aircraft. Now, people can fly in comfort
to any destination around the world.
Technologies provide people with many other great inventions. Each is created with a
purpose. In hot weather, people prefer air-conditioners rather than fans. Lifts are great in
4

tall buildings. Unless they want to exercise, no one will go up to the 10th floor using stairs!
Test

The means of communication have gone through great changes and they are constantly
changing from time to time. Telegraph, telephones, radios and televisions in the early days
are now slowly getting replaced with smartphones and the Internet. Even now, someone has
created a special machine that enables him to fly. So, what other inventions does the future
have for us?

You are going to read a story about Lisa.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap
(1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

LUCKY DECISION
Having the advantage of good internet reception, Lisa loves to shop online. It is
very convenient as she only has to wait for them right in front of her house. However, she
recently received a message (SMS) from the seller informing her that she might stand a
chance to win a new phone if she would agree to the terms and conditions. 1
There would be no more home delivery for her.
Lisa had already pictured a new handphone in mind so the possibility of getting a
free one was certainly tempting. 2 Based on her address, she chose a location
near her son’s school where she could easily drop by on her way to fetch him home.
Not long after that she placed an order to buy a set of skin care. Two days later,
Lisa received another short message (SMS) to inform her that her package was ready to
be collected. 3 Lisa went to the address given for the pick-up. Upon arriving
she found that the centre is actually a stationery shop. The owner is smart to grab the
4

opportunity to make his shop as a pick up centre.

Lisa was greeted by the person in charged of the shop and she immediately let
Test

him know of her intention. 4 He keyed in the number into a machine and as
the number matched with the one recorded, he went to find her package. 5
Lisa was satisfied to see everything in good condition upon inspection. Then, the
man approached her. “Congratulations! You are our lucky customer of the month,” he said
as he gave her a beautifully wrapped box. 6 Lisa got it just by a stroke of luck
as she never thought she would stand a chance of winning. Nevertheless, she was pleased
that she decided to try the self-collection programme that day.

A The prize was a brand new handphone.

B He handed Lisa a small box and asked her to check whether she got the correct item.
C The man asked her for the pin number given by the seller.
D She wanted him to give back her ordered goods.
E Therefore, she quickly agreed to the condition.
F She could pick it up anytime between 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
G She opened the small box carefully.
H She only needs to pick up the item she has ordered at a designated collection centre.

You are going to read an article about robots.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap
(1 – 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use.

The World of Robotics

The development in Science has brought a lot of changes into the world and the
life of human beings. Let us explore into a captivating world of robotics. Robotics is an
interesting part of Science that can lend a helping hand in doing a lot of work for us.
It is just very handy that we own many appliances to make life easier.
1 . However, they cannot function on their own. What if somebody can do the
tasks for you? It will be fantastic! Scientists and engineers have found that inventing robots
to help with certain jobs is great. 2 They think about the designing, building,
programming and creation of the robots.
There are a variety of robots, or machines that have been created
to do important work which can keep us healthy and make our jobs easier.
3 If the automobile industry uses robots to build cars, robots in factories enable
mass productions of items in industries such as food and clothing. Work can be done quickly
whereas the cost of production can be kept low. 4
In some countries, robots are used in restaurants to prepare and even serve the

4
customers. Robotics engineering is also important during the exploration of the outer space

Test
and the deep sea. 5 Those robots are well-equipped with cameras that take
images and videos, in which researchers can learn a lot of information that they provided.
6 We cannot live without them because they certainly provide us
convenience and comfort!

A Robotics are used to help doctors to carry out operations on patients in order to save their
lives.
B For example, we have washing machines, blenders, juicers and mixers.
C People always like to work together.
D Everybody wants to buy them.
E We cannot deny the importance of robotic technologies in our lives.
F Robots are sent there instead of human beings.
G Therefore, the products can be sold at a cheaper price to the consumers.
H Some of these people often cooperate with each other in their work.
