© Atoms, Molecules and lons Element 1. Element is a substance consisting of one type of atom only. 2. Itis a simple substance which cannot be broken down any further. Examples of elements: H, Mg, Ca, Ar, Fe 3. Atoms of different elements are different in size. Structure of an atom 1. Anatom consists of three sub-atomic particles: Protons, electrons and neutrons. a OF ~ electron nucleus 2. Atoms are electrically neutral because the numbers of protons and electrons are equal. - Proton number (or atomic number) is the number of protons in an atom. — Nucleon number (or mass number) is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom. — Nucleon number = Number of protons + number of neutrons 4. Amolecule of an element is a substance which contains two or more atoms of the same type. Amolecule of a compound is a substance which contains two or more atoms of different types.
