Problems in writing
Due to :
• Lack of reading
• Lack of bird eyes view / “waze” view
• Write while you read

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

PROBLEM 1 : Lack of VOICE and Cohesion

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Problem 2 : Lack of cohesion
• Another research carried out by Fauzia, Farah, and Nadia (2012) found a
positive realtionship between a teacher’s efficiency with job performance
. The research also found that in secondary schools, female teachers have
higher level of efficiency compared to male teachers. Besides, teachers
with more experience in teaching and have higher level of academic
background have higher self efficiency. The research also found out that
female students are seen to be more concerned of their teachers’
performance compared to male students. Students who came form
familiies with high source of income tend to look down upon their
teachers’ performances

• Comment
No linkages / flow from one statement to another statement

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Problem 3 : No synthesis
(plagiarism?)

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

In sum,

A literature review is not supposed to simply

demonstrate how much you've read, but
provide a description of how certain parts of
what you have read provide the foundation
for, motivate, and frame your research

• Methodological gap To close the gaps:
Research methodology

Problem statement (from Prof Ramayah’s class)

Problem statements often have three elements:

1. The problem itself, stated clearly and with enough contextual detail to establish why
it is important

2. The method of solving the problem, often stated as a claim or a working thesis

3. The purpose, statement of objective and scope of the project being proposed.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ISSUES

LAYER
The more detail the layers, the less the assumption,
the better
• Every time there is a jump between the layers, an
assumption is made (thus, a justification is required)
• One can choose any way he/she likes to arrange the
sequence of layers
• However, Issues of the same theme should be in the
same layer
• The Issues Layers indicate
- The scope of critical reviews (what to get from the
papers)
- The focused issues (designation of issues)
- The rationale in choosing issues to study (to move
from one level to the next)
- The Problem Statement

With A K-Chart, let’s try to answer these
questions again ….
1. What is the specific title of study
2. How wide/deep is the study?
3. How much is the literature review?
4. What do I look for in reading reference papers ?
5. How do I choose between two (or more) options
6. How do I decide to move to the next level of study?
7. How do I develop the objectives of study
8. What is the methodology (Theory, Simulation,
Experiment, Observation, Survey) ?
9. How many results (# curves, graphs, charts) can be
obtained
10. Which results to be focused on?
11. How to arrange the results
12. How many comparisons can be made?
13. How to cluster for sub-projects
14. Who to do what?
aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015
and more …
15. How to plan for publication ?
16. How to construct articles’ titles ?
17. How to organize the report structure ?
18. How to plan for a graduate thesis writing?
19. How to integrate with new ideas ?
20. How to re-align the area of research when the
original plan does not work ?

Some Viva / journal reviewers
questions
• Why did you decide on this particular research question?
• Did you encounter any problems with applying this method of
analysis?
• Do you think the data you collected were the most
appropriate to answer your research question or are there
any other data you would have liked to have collected?
• In what ways does this research make a significant
contribution to your particular field of study? What have you
done that merits a PhD?
• Comment on and justify your research methodology. Why
have you done it this way? What are the alternatives to your
approach?

Components in journal articles
Journal articles can be challenging to read, but most contain
many of the same components.
• Abstract - a summary of the entire article
• The literature review provides information about past studies
that have been done on this topic.
• The methods section provides information about the
individuals that the authors studied and the way that they
conducted their analysis.
• The results section provides information about what the
authors found when they analyzed their data.
• The conclusion or discussion section summarizes the authors'
main findings and explains why the findings are so important

Active reading
How to Approach the Article
When you read journal articles, always remember that YOU
are going to write a paper based on what you read.

So, do the following:

• Keep in mind your research questions

• Focus on the information in the article that is

relevant to your research question (skim over other parts)

• Question everything you read - not everything is 100% true

• Think critically about what you read and try to build your
own argument based on it

Introduction to Atlas.ti

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

“ATLAS.ti” stands for “Archiv für Technik, Lebenswelt und Alltagssprache”

[Archive for Technology, the Life World and Everyday Language].

The extension “ti” stands for “text interpretation.”

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Types of data can be used for Atlas.ti
• text documents (such as interviews, articles, reports);

• images (photos, screen shots, diagrams),

• audio recordings (interviews, broadcasts, music),

• video clips (audiovisual material),

• PDF files (papers, brochures, reports),

• geo data (locative data using Google Earth).

When you open ATLAS.ti, the welcome wizard
appears which offers you four options on
beginning a session. You can choose to open
an already existing Hermeneutic Unit (HU)

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015
Primary Documents (PDs)
• PDs are the data you need to analyze—audio
or video files, images, interview transcriptions,
maps, or text documents
• Original data sources are preserved when you
make a file into a PD
• PDs can be RTF, PDF, Microsoft Word, JPEG,
AVI, WAV, and more

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Quotation
• A quotation is a segment from a PD that is
interesting or important to the user.
• In textual documents, a quotation is an
arbitrary sequence of characters ranging in
length from a single character, to a word, a
sentence, or a paragraph, even up to the
entire data file.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Still empty, no quotation yet.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Then , transfer the files into the software by
Add document  Add document (my library)

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Coding Documents
1. Open Coding – use Open Coding when you want to create a new node and
associate it with an existing quotation or text segment.
2. Code-by-List – use this option if you want to assign existing codes to a quotation or
selection
3. In-Vivo Coding – use this option when the selected text itself is a good name for
the code
4. Auto Coding – use this option if you want to apply the currently selected code to
the marked segment. It is a quick way to assign the same code to consecutive text
segments.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Open coding or manual coding

Open coding allows you to create your own terms for the codes you assign.
After you assign a code, it will be displayed in the right-hand task area.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Code In-Vivo
• the highlighted text as its code name.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Code by List
After you have created multiple codes, the Code by List option
becomes available to you.

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

Special function
- Auto coding

aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015

When to use auto-code function
• When we know exactly what to search
• The keyword is unique word (not too general)
• We’ve already prepared outline for write up
• Examples of auto code:
Author’s name (Guru of our study)
Unique concept (e.g Opportunism, attachment
condition)
Unique method of investigation (e.g snowball
sampling)
aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015
Auto code : Search by author’s name e.g: “Penrose”
aznur hajar abdullah (AHA) Copyright 2015
"Confirm Always"
Pls untick.

Groundedness: the number of data segments (e.g., quotations)
associated with a particular code

Density: the number of links (associations) between a code and other

codes, families, or memos
