Materials Need: Sewing Guidelines

*Fabric yardage based on a 44" bolt. You may need more or less depending on bolt size.

Glossary of Sewing Terms


Backstitch: to stitch forward and then backward 3-4 stitches, holding your thread in place.
Backstitching should be done on all stitching except for basting or gathering stitches.
Baste: to set your machine to the longest stitch and sewing a straight line. Basting stitches
can be used for keeping fabric from stretching and for gathering fabric.
Casing: the turned edge of the fabric making a little pocket or envelope for elastic, drawstrings
or ribbon to go through.
Center Back/Front: the center point on the fabric where the garment would be in the front or
the back of the model.
Hem: to fold fabric over to create a nice encased finished edge.
