the Joint Session of the US Congress

Teodoro Locsin, Jr.)
Maria Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco Aquino was
born on January 25 of 1933 in Paniqui, Tarlac. The
parents of Cory Aquino owns a sugar plantation and is
said to be one of the richest family in their province. She
started her high school years here in the Philippines but
later went to the United States of America at Ravenhill
Academy in Philadelphia, and then attended the Notre
Dame Convent School to continue her studies. She also
took her undergraduate course in America at the College
of Mount St. Vincent in New York City. When she returned
to the Philippines she studied law at Far Eastern
University. While studying, she met Benigno “Ninoy”
Aquino Jr. The two became lovers and got married. Soon
after, Cory decided to leave law school to focus on their
family.

Benigno Aquino became the youngest elected

governor in the Philippine history. He was known for
opposing the political views of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and
was expected to win against him for the presidential
position. But Marcos declared martial law giving him the
power to stay in the position and revoked the election for
the next president of the Philippines during their time.
Marcos ordered the military to arrest Benigno and
sentenced him to death. Despite the fact that he is inside
the prison, he still remains active through his wife,
Corazon. Due to medical issues, Benigno and his family
moved to the United States to seek medical treatment in a
condition that he would never return to the Philippines.

Benigno returned to the Philippines but right after

he got out of the plane he got shot and died at instant.
Cory was widowed at 50 and returned to the Philippines
with the people’s sympathy for the death of her husband.
The People Power Revolution happened and encouraged
her to run for president and replace Marcos. She didn't
have the intention to run for the position but she won the
election. However, the official result was released by the
government and Marcos was declared the winner.

Historical Background of the Document During Corazon Aquino's speech before the US Congress,
you can observe Corazon walking to greet the people
around her, and everyone seemed to be very proud and
looking up to her at the time. She hasn't spoken yet, but the
crowd hasn't stopped clapping for her. As she was being
introduced to the important people around her, they gave
her another round of applause and praise.

During her speech, she discussed the audience and the rest
of the world about her husband's hardship in prison.
She told everyone how they mistreated her husband, Ninoy
Aquino, locking him up in a tiny cell, stripping him naked,
and threatening him in the middle of the night.
She told everyone that Ninoy was brave, had hope, and did
not give up even though he was suffering at the time.

She was the only woman who stood her ground during the
election for President of the Philippines (Free People). She
was brave despite being in a difficult situation, and she did
everything she could to honor the people who believed in
her, as well as her late husband Ninoy Aquino.

She declared that the people of the Philippines are FREE

and that they will never be mistreated or fearful of anyone
who comes across them because she wants peace and
balance in her country. She once stated that she would not
betray or disturb the peace in order to gain control of her
people. She will not tolerate those who threaten her
people; she will not tolerate those who threaten our little
soldiers and our freedom; she will do everything for our
freedom; she will fight and will not give up for her people;
and this is why people voted for her as president.
People still choose democracy, she claimed, even when
they are in need of necessities such as clothing and food.
The pressure of her duty to "Her People" is pressing on
her.
And yet, the Filipino people didn't get what they deserved,
such as freedom or housing during crises, because half of
their export revenues, or $2 billion, were taken or stolen
from them, but they didn't get a single benefit.

People are still waiting for her to finish speaking, and

more people are still paying attention to what she has to
say. Until she leaves, everyone will applaud her,
congratulate her, and wish her well.
