Unit 6

Destruction of the environment

Reasons
1. Rapid advancement of technology and industries
2. Lack of “ecological” education and orientation
3. Means of transport/industries and the production of gases (generate pollutants)
4. Fires in order to clear big areas to build
5. Growing populations that lead to rapid spatial development of cities
Consequences
1. Development of dangerous illnesses/ health problems (cancer, respiratory
problems)
2. Decrease of oxygen in the air
3. Pollution of the water and the ground from the industrial waste
4. Changes in the weather (climate change)- Global warming, acid rain
5. Shortage of water
Solutions
1. Use reusable bags made of cloth instead of plastic ones. Plastic bags take
years to decompose and pose danger to wildlife, especially to marine species,
that choke to death from them. Also, you can use paper bags that are more
environmentally friendly and recyclable.
2. Use energy efficient devices. They use less energy, last longer and economise
on your electricity bills.
3. Proper garbage/rubbish disposal by reducing all that ends in landfills and
start recycling. In this way you protect natural habitats and reduce the need
to consume natural resources.
4. Use public transport or even better bicycles that have a positive impact on the
environment and help you stay healthy.
5. Buy less products with non-recyclable packaging.
6. Save water by taking showers and not baths. Install energy efficient shower
heads and solar water heaters.
7. Reduce the use of air condition use that pollutes the environment and
consumes large amounts of energy (increases the demand for electricity).
Install ceiling fans.
8. Use renewable (alterative) energy sources like solar, wind or water that are
environmentally friendly and inexpensive.
