Intern Day

The desire to move across the country, a lifelong interest in forestry, the start of a career switch,
and post-bachelor's degree panic are just some of the causes that brought an array of interns to
DNR this year. On July 27, 2023, these interns gathered in Olympia to celebrate National Intern
Day and explore the possibilities of their work experiences at DNR. Workplace Culture and
Development organized the event and helped interns network, develop their resumes, and
solicit wisdom from DNR staff.
The interns from varying divisions and regions got to know each other over an icebreaker, which
allowed them to learn more about what other roles the agency has to offer. Then, they enjoyed
several activities including a resume workshop, a social media briefing, and two panels with
DNR staff explaining their roles in the agency, the issues they work on, and advice seeking jobs
in the natural resources sector.
Joseph Flores, from Human Resources, told the group about the importance of creating a
succinct story on their resumes.
DNR’s social media team, Rachel Terlep and Mary Watkins, explained how they use passion and
strategy to boost the public’s interaction with the agency.
Garren Andrews, a Natural Resource Specialist in the Forest Practices Division (and former DNR
intern), reassured attendees’ confidence about the transition from school into the workforce.
While he was once worried about leaving behind the freedom of his college years, he found his
DNR job engaging and never boring, he told the interns.
Candace Montoya, Uplands Budget Manager, shared her story of building a career at DNR after
her internship. She encouraged the interns to embrace the learning curve at the start of every
new position.
These stories, along with the wisdom of all the other guests, demonstrate the value of a DNR
internship. As they start their new careers, the interns have been able to grow their network,
receive incredible mentorship, and gain hands-on experience in their field. They left the event
more prepared to reflect on how they want their careers to progress.
