Engineering? (10pts)
Science: theories and hypothesis.
Technology: optimize the machine from Engineering
Engineering: create machines basing on science
Mathematics is required during the process from Science to Engineering and Technology.
Medicine: the STEM processes are applied in medical-related fields.
2. What is the meaning of Biomedical Engineering according to NIH? (5pts)
BME is an emerging multidisciplinary field that involves the applications of state-of-the-art
technology to the creation of new methodologies and devices for human welfare and for a better
understanding of human biological processes.
3. What are the enormous and urgent needs of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnam? (5pts)
Enormous and urgent needs:
- In the manufacturing of medical equipment
- Of qualified technical workforce and leadership in the health related sectors with technical
background
- International aids often are not sustainable or don’t address the right issues
- Rate of increase in diabetes, heart and lung diseases among the highest in the world
- Precarious healthcare system
- Unique research topics to be investigated
- Motivated and energetic people
- Determination of the country leadership to develop BME related activities
Question 2 (25pts):
1. List some international agencies, professional societies related to BME. (10pts)
Research and Funding Agencies:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- National Science Foundation (NSF)
- Whittaker Foundation
- Coulter Foundation
Quality Control Agencies:
- Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET)
- Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) University Network (AUN)
Professional Societies:
- International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE)
- American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE)
- Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES)
2. Why BME is considered as an emerging and multidiscipline field? List some BME subfields and give
example of each. (10pts)
Since BME is the integration of knowledge from several fields, namely:
- Biology
- Medicine
- Mathematic, Physics, Chemistry
- Traditional engineering
- Applied science
- Basic science
Question 3 (15pts):
1. What is a stent? Briefly explain how it works (5pts)
- A stent is a tiny tube that the doctor can insert into a blocked passageway to keep it open and
restores the flow of blood or other fluids.
- Doctors put a stent into an artery in a procedure known as a percutaneous coronary intervention
(PCI), or angioplasty with stent. During PCI, doctors will insert a catheter into the artery. The
catheter has a small balloon with a stent around it on one end. When the catheter reaches the point
of the blockage, the doctor will inflate the balloon. When the balloon inflates, the stent expands
and locks into place. The doctor will then remove the catheter, leaving the stent in place to hold
the artery open.
2. Choose 1 application in BME and describe briefly about it in a 5 to 10 line paragraph (Why you
choose this application, How to use it, What it’s used for,…) (5pts)
- Name of application
- What it’s used for?
- How to use?
- How does it work?
- Why you choose that application?
3. What are the goals of IU-BME? As a BME student, what can you do to achieve these goals? (5pts)
Educate leaders in BME who can think out-of-the box
Be excellent in theory and practice => research and design
Have good skills in: – Hands-on experience – Real-world issues – Critical thinking – Self learning
& Group teaching – Communications – Scientific research
- Student’s opinion

3. List and explain the 5P Medicine model. What are the BME-IU aspirations from it? Same questions
for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (10pts)
5P Medicine is:
Personalization: Specific for each patient in diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring.
Prediction: Analyzes and calculates the risk that a person will develop a disease.
Prevention: Helps make decisions that prevent the appearance of diseases.
Participation: Tries to put the patient at the center of the healthcare system, teaching and
providing appropriate tools so the patient can participate in the responsibility for his or her health
care.
Precision: an innovative approach to tailoring disease prevention and treatment that takes into
account differences in people's genes, environments, and lifestyles.
Industrial Revolution 4.0:
Aspirations:
- Develop telemedicine: Telemedicine allows health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose
and treat patients at a distance using telecommunications technology.
- Enable many new technologies, like blockchain, big data, cloud computing, and IoTs, to
track patients' medical records. That more accessible for healthcare professionals to
understand the patient's history and deal accordingly.
- Provide flexibility in design and manufacturing by which production system is digitally
controlled.
